Not long ago, word was released that Impact Wrestling had released veteran wrestler and former WWE Superstar Alberto El Patron (Del Rio) from his Impact Wrestling contract. It was surprising but not shocking as El Patron was one of the companies biggest stars but also had a history of being difficult to work with and hasn't been able to keep employment for very long no matter where he's worked. Executive Scott D'Amore spoke with Sport Illustrated's "Extra Mustard" and gave some insight as to why the decision to release El Patron was made.

D'Amore said the biggest issue was trust. As Impact works to build a new audience and ensure fans understand what their new vision is, the worst thing they could do is be untrustworthy. When El Patron no-showed a Lucha Underground vs. Impact Wrestling Twitch event, he said, "It was obviously an unfortunate situation. When Alberto failed to show up to the event, we made our decision on a new main event for the show."

The decision to release El Patron was not made right away. It wasn't until after the event had come and gone that execs sat down and took a serious look at what it meant to offer matches and be uncertain about whether or not they could deliver.

Even though El Patron said the no-show was related to a family issue that required his attention, it was decided El Patron wasn't trustworthy and it was for this reason, he was released. D'Amore said, "We need the fans to know that when we say we are going to deliver something, that we'll deliver it. We did not feel good about advertising something and not delivering it, and we were not going to put ourselves in a situation where that could happen again at Redemption."

This is not to say that the main event for Impact will never be affected again by a wrestler changing plans or moving to another promotion. Talent in Impact seems to be leaving the company on the regular. That said, El Patron no-showed while under contract and that is not something likely to happen with many, if any other professionals.

What's next for El Patron is uncertain. There were rumors WWE, namely Vince McMahon would welcome him back but the more El Patron burns bridges, the more that seems unlikely.
