Bray Wyatt's second Universal Championship reign was fun while it lasted.

Six months after dropping the title to Goldberg at Super ShowDown, Wyatt finally regained it by defeating Braun Strowman at SummerSlam. Only this time, Wyatt didn't hold it very long.

One week after SummerSlam, Wyatt had to defend it against Strowman and Roman Reigns in a No Holds Barred triple threat match at Payback. The Big Dog emerged victorious to reclaim the title that he never lost.

So, why did WWE decide to give The Fiend a one-week title reign, when they could have just had Reigns take it off of Strowman at Payback?

On Dropkick DiSKussions, Sportskeeda's Tom Colohue explained that WWE had Reigns dethrone Wyatt as the champion in order to bring more heat on him as a heel. Wyatt is supposedly being pushed as the lead babyface on SmackDown now.

"As for why they gave The Fiend the title - they wanted the face to lose," Colohue explained. "You're supposed to hate Roman Reigns. They're genuinely worried now that they've made him a bada*s, everyone is going to cheer him. That's why in the ThunderDome, people were specifically instructed to boo Roman Reigns."

When Reigns returned at SummerSlam, where he attacked both Wyatt and Strowman, many interpreted it as the start of a heel turn. And barring a change of plans, it looks as though WWE is keen on going in that direction.

Roman Reigns Universal Champion Payback

Reigns' heel turn was cemented when it was revealed at the end of SmackDown Live that he was working with legendary WWE manager Paul Heyman, the advocate of Brock Lesnar.

That said, it sounds like WWE is still hoping to eventually make Reigns the company's top babyface again. Perhaps a brief run as a villainous top-tier heel will help WWE finally achieve that goal.

This Is Exactly What Reigns Needs

Most marquee superstars alternate between babyface and heel, but WWE has spent way too much time trying to make Reigns the No. 1 good guy. A heel turn is necessary for Reigns, and this is a major step in eventually making him a major babyface again.
