WWE held Evolution on Sunday and while the show was overshadowed by the controversy surrounding Crown Jewel and the news of Roman Reigns' illness, the event itself was very well done, with a lot of great matches and moments that should make the women proud.

Legends and rookies had their chance to shine and in those moments, delivered beyond expectations. The stars of the night were not only the names fans might have expected but some surprising NXT hopefuls who made a lot of noise when it came to getting noticed.

With the first-ever WWE all-female pay-per-view and Evolution now a memory, we're looking at the winners and losers from that event.

Winner: Opening Match and Alicia Fox

We often give Alicia Fox a hard time as being one of the more irrelevant female competitors on the roster but on Sunday, she showed why she is the longest reigning female employee in the company. She did an admiral job filling in for an injured Alexa Bliss and did the majority of the work selling for the Hall of Famers.

In fact, partially because of Fox, this match was far better than most might have expected. Mickie James was her reliable self and the match was longer than many might have thought with the action strong. The right team won and it was a good way to open the show.

Loser: Asuka

An argument can be made that choosing Nia Jax to win the Battle Royal was logical, it's unfortunate that in that victory comes another loss for Asuka. The Battle Royal itself started odd, finished strong and really, it was better than it could have been. One only hopes Asuka gets some sort of push after this event. Right now, she's been largely underutilized.

Winner: Future Of Women's Wrestling In WWE

via wwe.com

The women of NXT showed well, the highlight being the match between Kari Sane and Shayna Bazsler. That was a hard match to follow it was wise to have Becky Lynch versus Charlotte next because, if not for the Street Fight, the NXT women would have stolen the show.

NXT has a bright future, especially when you consider the match put on earlier in the night between Toni Storm and Io Shirai. This event was a chance to give a spotlight to the future of the Women's Division and those that got the chance, seized that opportunity.

But, at the end of the day, the stars who were supposed to be the stars of the show brought their A-game. Lynch and Flair were absolutely right on and Rousey was no slouch herself. There are good role models for the young crop coming up and the ladies main eventing in WWE are not going anywhere. This is a good time to be a fan of women's wrestling.

Loser: Crown Jewel

The only real drawback to the pay-per-view was WWE's attempt to promote Crown Jewel which was met with a chorus of boos by the audience and a shift in direction by WWE producers who scrambled to work around the distaste for an event that has not gone as planned for WWE.

Clearly, the WWE Universe is not on the same page with WWE for continuing to hold this show in Saudi Arabia and they let their voices be heard. The downside of all this is that it slightly overshadowed a historic event for the women, who, by the way, will not be allowed to compete at that event. Seemed like a stupid time to promote a show that has nothing to do with the current broadcast.
