Vince McMahon had to take a lot of risks in order for his WWF company to topple WCW in the Monday Night Wars. One of the most iconic moments of the battle for ratings supremacy occurred on Apr. 27, 1998 - when Triple H led D-Generation X in an invasion of WCW at the Norfolk Scope.

That invasion saw the DX  army arrive in tanks, where they rallied fans to chant for DX while screaming insults against WCW. Eric Bischoff and co. refused to let Triple H's squad in, but the WWF had made a masterful chess move that WCW had no answer for.

But according to John Bradshaw Layfield, WWF was actually expected WCW to fight back against their invasion. He gave the details on the Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast (h/t to WrestleZone for transcriptions):

"We had a friendly rivalry, we did have the time when they invaded from Norfolk, we invaded in the afternoon and we didn’t know what would happen, Jerry Brisco went around telling people to be ready so we were in the parking lot, we had Ken Shamrock and that’s about all we needed really. We had no idea what was going to happen, we were out there until Vince was leaving."

Eric Bischoff - who also appeared on the podcast - admitted that he regrets not just letting DX into the building, believing it "would have been some of the greatest television in the history of wrestling."

After the invasion, the WWF began to take over in the ratings wars. The rise of superstars such as the rebellious 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin and The Rock - coupled with the introduction of The Attitude Era - turned out to be a massive turning point for the company.

WCW then began to shoot themselves in the foot over and over again. Relying on aging stars to carry the show, Bischoff and company officials granted plenty of power to Hulk Hogan and Kevin Nash - who essentially got to decide the outcomes of all matches.

The Fingerpoke of Doom incident was arguably the final nail in the coffin for WCW. That night, Mankind defeated The Rock on the Raw is War tapings, and the rest was history from then on out.

But it all started when DX invaded WCW, which brought zero relatiation from Bischoff and his squad.
