Fox's first SmackDown Live broadcast will take place on Oct. 4, and the episode will also mark the show's 20th anniversary special.
On Monday, WWE.com released details, and they listed which WWE legends will be returning for the 20th anniversary show. The big-named wrestlers slated to appear are Hulk Hogan, Trish Stratus, Sting, Ric Flair, Goldberg, Kurt Angle, Booker T, Lita, Jerry Lawler, Mick Foley and Mark Henry.
WWE.com also announced in the statement that tickets for the big show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles will go on sale this Friday. Last year, WWE celebrated the 1,000th episode of SmackDown Live.
There's been no shortage of special episodes for WWE's programming over the past couple of years. On Jan. 22 of last year, WWE celebrated the 25th anniversary special for Monday Night Raw, which also consisted of many wrestling legends returning for the show.
And just three weeks ago, WWE had a special Raw reunion special - which saw the return of many wrestling greats included Hogan, 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin and members of D-Generation X. There was no specific anniversary or event to celebrate there; it was likely a plan by WWE to simply fix their long-term ratings problem.
The return of these many legends will make for a special and memorable Oct. 4 show. Sting has only appeared a handful of times since his last match against Seth Rollins four years ago. It wouldn't be a surprised if Lita, Lawler and Booker T were used for commentary roles on this show, given their success in that area.
What This Means
It's no surprise that WWE and Fox are working together in bringing back as many legends as they can. These all-time greats always make for great television ratings, even when they're not competing in the ring. Fans always want to see their favorite superstars from childhood in some capacity. The show is stacked with a great quantity of wrestling icons, and Fox and WWE will undoubtedly see excellent ratings for the Oct. 4 broadcast.
