Seth Rollins made a statement ahead of his Universal Championship match against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 35, but what we saw on Raw wasn't originally WWE's plan.

Rollins went after Lesnar and hit him with both a superkick and a Curb Stomp finisher, gaining some momentum ahead of their WrestleMania match. But according to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Ringside News), there were completely different plans in place - until Vince McMahon decided to make a last-minute change.

The original plan was for Lesnar to simply attack Rollins instead, once again displaying himself as the unstoppable force before their match. Meltzer suggested that Rollins "needed this" since he's a babyface that fans aren't expecting to win.

Rollins won the 2019 men's Royal Rumble and decided to challenge Lesnar for his Universal Championship. Before the attack, he acknowledged that beating Lesnar is "improbable, but not impossible." He vowed to dethrone the Universal Champion and said there's nothing "he can do about it."

Of course, the early signs point to Lesnar retaining his championship at WrestleMania 35 this Sunday. Brad Shepard recently on the Oh, You Didn't Know podcast said that Lesnar's contract expires some time after WrestleMania, and that he was informed "not to bank" on Lesnar dropping the title to Rollins.

This is a similar situation to last year, where Lesnar entered WrestleMania 34 as the Universal Champion with a murky future in WWE. Although many expected Roman Reigns to win the belt from Lesnar, it was the latter who wound up emerging victorious. He then signed a new WWE contract after WrestleMania.

Lesnar is widely expected to head back to the UFC soon, but it's unknown if he'll stick around in the WWE much longer. Wrestling obviously allows him to make piles of money in such little time, but if he were to lose to Rollins at 'Mania, it could be a sign that he's about to leave WWE after all.
