Amid rumors that Sting could be headed to the rival AEW promotion, WWE is slated to honor the Hall of Famer next week with a new special.

WWE Network News announced that they'll be airing Sting: The Lost Tape on WWE Network next Sunday. The special will include " never before seen and unreleased footage of Sting including interviews and other backstage highlights from the date of WCW Slamboree 1995."

In the statement, WWE Network News acknowledged the speculation about Sting's relationship with the company ending, but they noted "that could very well be just a rumor."

Back in November, WWE Network released WWE Untold: Sting's Last Stand, which chronicled his last career match - a WWE World Heavyweight Championship bout with Seth Rollins at Night of Champions 2015.

Rumors about Sting heading to AEW began last week following social media activity between the wrestling icon and Cody Rhodes. Also, Mattel removed Sting action figures from their Legends 7 series, citing "circumstances out of our control."

It was later reported that Sting isn't currently under contract with WWE, so if he wanted to, the former face of WCW could jump to AEW. The company has landed several WWE legends already, including Chris Jericho, Matt Hardy, play-by-play man Jim Ross plus Hall of Famers Jake "The Snake" Roberts and Billy Gunn.

Sting has talked about wanting to have a showdown of some sort with The Undertaker, and there have been ongoing rumors about a possible match between the two - despite the former's current retirement status. That match is obviously unlikely to happen, but whether it's in AEW or WWE, it seems like it's matter of time until Sting appears again.

If He Has The Choice, Sting Should Pick AEW

It wouldn't be surprising if WWE worked extensively to keep Sting. Vince loves keeping Hall of Fame talents under legends contracts, after all. But if AEW comes calling, Sting would be better off joining them, because the company would certainly use him better. WWE poorly booked Sting during his brief tenure there, but AEW wouldn't make that same mistake.
