By releasing six Superstars this week, WWE has rid its roster of two more female tag teams when there weren't that many to begin with.

WWE shocked fans this week by releasing six Superstars, many of which appeared to have angles in places and relatively secure jobs. Most notably Braun Strowman and Aleister Black. Strowman was competing for the WWE Title less than three weeks ago, and Aleister Black re-debuted on SmackDown two weeks ago after teasing a new character for the month prior.

Two Teams Down

The releases have also dealt a serious blow to what was already a pretty thin women's tag division. By letting go of Ruby Riott and Lana, WWE eliminated two teams from that division in one fell swoop. Both Liv Morgan and Naomi have now been left without tag team partners. Unless WWE decides to now team Naomi with Morgan, of course, which isn't completely beyond the realms of possibility.

These weren't inactive tag teams either. Lana and Naomi wrestled against Mandy Rose and Dana Brooke on Raw earlier this week. Riott and Morgan competed for the Tag Team Titles less than a week ago on SmackDown. Speaking of which, these two releases, in particular, make it feel as if the still relatively new Women's Tag Team Titles will soon be sent to the WWE Warehouse.

Vince McMahon vs. Tag Team Wrestling

It's no secret that Vince McMahon wasn't keen on introducing the titles to begin with. In fact, it's no secret that the chairman isn't exactly a big fan of tag team wrestling full stop. It has also been reported that Natalya had to fight hard for the Tag Team Turmoil match and subsequent title match to take place at WrestleMania this year and not be put on regular TV instead.

Even though the titles continue to get TV time, they don't really mean much. Outside of two Superstars who fans are very much behind holding them, the matches have no build and are just sort of there. With even fewer teams to challenge for those titles, it seems highly likely that they will soon become a thing of the past. How exactly WWE does that without people kicking up a fuss remains to be seen, especially with fans returning to buildings a little more than a month from now.
