WWE's recent trademarks are not a sign that more old shows are coming back, just a reaction to a different company beating them to the WarGames name.

17 years have passed since WWE bought WCW and only recently has Vince McMahon decided to start making the most of some of the things that made the brand famous. Starrcade made its WWE debut last year as a landmark house show, and it will return again next month as it is quickly becoming an annual event once again.

WWE also finally staged its first ever WarGames match last year. In fairness, that one might have been a Triple H idea. The NXT TakeOver that took place over last year's Survivor Series weekend was WarGames themed, and the match made its WWE debut. Clearly, it went down well with everyone involved as it will return again this November.

Strangely, WarGames has also been used in another, non-WWE affiliated wrestling company in the past year. On September 6, 2018, Major League Wrestling (MLW) staged its very own WarGames match. It featured the likes of Tommy Dreamer, Jimmy Havoc, and Abyss. It was even on a show called War Games. So how did they manage to get away with that and not end up in court with WWE?

Well, because MLW beat WWE to the WarGames trademark. It's not like WWE to be beaten on this kind of thing, and apparently, the promotion was not happy about it. According to The Wrestling Observer, that's why WWE just decided to renew a lot of old trademarks. Most of them related to WCW, WCCW, and other promotions, and some fans thought other events might be making a comeback upon hearing the news.

However, that is sadly not to be. WWE is simply making sure that it is not beaten to the punch once again when it comes to its older trademarks. What still isn't clear is how WWE can still stage another WarGames event when MLW now owns the trademark. Perhaps they have had to get MLW's permission. Or maybe it's because WWE calls it WarGames while MLW utilizes a space and labeled its event War Games. That seems unlikely, but surely some sort of deal must be in place.
