The New York Yankees have acquired starting pitcher Lance Lynn and money from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for Tyler Austin and Luis Rijo, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

The 31-year-old Lynn was signed to a one-year deal worth $12 million by the Twins in the offseason. Lynn struggled during his brief time in the Twin Cities, posting a mere 7-8 record with a 5.10 ERA and 1.63 WHIP.

But with Sonny Gray struggling and Jordan Montgomery out for the season after needing Tommy John surgery, the Yankees needed more depth in the rotation. The acquisition of Lynn comes just days after they picked up lefty J.A. Happ from the Toronto Blue Jays. Now, the AL Wild Card-leading Yankees boast Masahiro Tanaka, Luis Severino, C.C. Sabathia, Lynn, Happ and Gray in their rotation

Lynn did post double-digit wins with the St. Louis Cardinals in each of the last five seasons, so the Yankees are banking on him to return to form. They're going to need a lot of luck to catch the Boston Red Sox for the AL East lead, but acquiring Lynn certainly bolsters their chances of doing so.

In acquiring Austin, the Twins get a 26-year-old who simply wasn't getting enough playing time in New York. The Yankees are loaded with roster players and have an elite farm system, so Austin didn't have a long-term future. He gets a chance to become a full-time player in Minnesota.

The Yankees are in prime position to make another run at the World Series, and acquiring Lynn is a low-risk move with a potentially very high reward. Minnesota simply didn't work out for Lynn, but he now gets the chance to shine with one of the AL's top teams.

GM Brian Cashman has acquired two quality starters and reliever Zach Britton, without having to give up any of his elite prospects. It's been an excellent week for Yankees fans, to say the least.
