The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees have by far the most iconic and historic rivalry in North American sports, and it was on its finest display at Fenway Park during their game on Wednesday evening.

Early in the game, Tyler Austin of the Yankees slide into Brock Holt of the Red Sox, trying to break up the possibility of a double play. That's where the tension first started, and it got worse from there.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora used his manager's challenge to see if the umpires would rule Austin out for an illegal side. But the call on the field was upheld, and the game only got more heated.

Red Sox reliever Joe Kelly faced Austin in the seventh inning and hit him with a pitch. That's when the real brawl broke out:

Along with Kelly and Austin, Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin received an ejection from the game, and we can probably expect suspensions and/or fines to be handed out the players and coaches.

The Yankees won the game 10-7, bringing their record up to 6-6 while the Red Sox saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end. Boston pitcher David Price left the game in the first inning with a hand injury after giving up four runs, though it's not series.

With the Red Sox missing the playoffs in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015 and the Yankees missing it in 2013, 2015 and 2016, this historic rivalry lost much of its steam and slowly became irrelevant. But it looks to be back on for real this time.

Boston and New York will play the rubber match at Fenway Park on Thursday, and bragging rights will be on the line for these AL East foes. The only question is if the teams will be on their best behaviors, or if more tension will lead to another brawl.
