The Young Bucks sat down with Chris van Vliet and explained just how close they were to signing with WWE. They said at one point, in their heads, it was a done deal.
Matt and Nick said to YouTube host Chris van Vliet that before Tony Khan came to them with the offer to run their own promotion with AEW, the team, and Kenny Omega, were about ready to make the jump to WWE. They said at one point, while all three of them were in the same room, " 'I think we're all going to WWE, how can you say no to that?'"
In reference to the negotiations with WWE before they chose AEW, Matt said, "We talked to endlessly." Every time they brought up something that was concering for them, WWE had an answer saying 'We can do this.'. Eventually, it became a situation where WWE had big plans to use the team and Omega on the main roster right away and offer a limited schedule with fewer dates that other wrestlers.
But, it was the limited dates and lack of creative control that eventually was the deciding factor. Knowing what being behind the scenes was like in WWE and saying they hated the atmosphere, "One thing that took us out of the race for going to WWE was the amount of dates that they wanted us to do," Nick mentioned. "We have young families. Even with the limited schedule, it was like, 'God, I can't imagine being home [just] for 2 days for my kids.'"
Eventually, Khan gave them an offer to run their own thing in AEW, hire their own guys and run the show. It was something that offered them the creative freedom and ability to make money that they needed. The chose AEW.
What This Means
The Young Bucks are happy with the decision they've made but they realize it came with consequences. "[WWE] hates us, I think. New Japan hates us too," Nick stated.
Saying they understand what AEW means to wrestling right now, people are afraid of new and different.
