Zack Ryder just informed us all that he recently surpassed Bruno Sammartino's record as the longest reigning champion in WWE history.

2018 has been a big year for long title reigns in WWE. In an era where wrestlers can win a championship one minute and lose it the next, sometimes literally, long reigns are largely considered a thing of the past. However, Brock Lesnar and Pete Dunne's respective reigns surpassed the 500-day mark in 2018, and AJ Styles held the WWE Championship for the first 11 and a half months of the year.

Even though 2018 has been a year of long reigns, none of them compare to the WWE Championship reigns of old. The longest of all time belongs to the late, great, Bruno Sammartino. The longest of Sammartino's two runs with the title lasted an incredible 2803 days. A record that will never be broken, or will it?

Zack Ryder reminded fans on New Year's Eve that on April 28, 2011, he became the Internet Champion. A title he created himself and doesn't have to defend, so he technically still has it today. The reason Ryder has decided to remind us of the fact he remains Internet Champion is because seven and a half years later, he has surpassed the record set by Sammartino decades ago.

Ryder took to Twitter and declared himself "the longest reigning champion in WWE history," also including a photo of himself with the Internet Title. Ryder also wrote #StillHere at the end of the tweet which he has been doing a lot recently. That's because unless he shows his face on tonight's Raw, the former US Champion hasn't been on a single episode of the flagship show in 2018.

We are all very aware that Ryder hasn't really broken any records, as is he. Since its the Internet Title Ryder is referring to, Sammartino's incredible record remains intact and likely will do forever more. Along with the fact that Sammartino held a legitimately recognized title, he also defended it on a regular basis. Internet Champion or not, we hope Ryder gets more opportunities in 2019 than he has been given in 2018.
