With some assistance from The Usos, Roman Reigns managed to get past Brock Lesnar in their back-and-forth Last Man Standing match at WWE SummerSlam last week.

The Tribal Chief and Lesnar traded blow for blow in a match that was well-received by fans and pundits. But Lesnar was unable to dethrone the longest-reigning Universal Champion in WWE history.

The Usos and Reigns buried The Beast Incarnate under a bunch of rubble, and the latter was unable to escape the referee's 10-second count. The victory marked Reigns' fourth straight win over Lesnar. The Undisputed WWE Universal Champion also defeated Lesnar at SummerSlam 2018, at Crown Jewel 2021 and of course at WrestleMania 38 four months ago.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), Dave Meltzer noted that WWE's "goal" for this match " was for Reigns to win but to protect Lesnar and maintain his aura.

Protecting Lesnar has been a priority for WWE since his babyface turn. He also lost to Reigns in controversial fashion at Crown Jewel in October. The referee was knocked out while Lesnar attempted to perform an F5, and The Usos showed up to deliver Superkicks to Reigns' archenemy. Reigns then hit Lesnar with the title, and a second official counted the three-second pinfall to help Reigns emerge victorious.

At Royal Rumble 2022, Reigns attacked Lesnar during his WWE Championship defense against Bobby Lashley. The Almighty pinned Lesnar to become the new WWE Champion, though Lesnar would regain it a few weeks later at the Elimination Chamber 2022 pay-per-view.

What's Next For Roman Reigns?

The rivalry between Reigns and Lesnar is done. While it's unclear what WWE has planned for Lesnar, we do know that Reigns will next feud with Drew McIntyre. The former WWE Champion will challenge The Tribal Chief at the Sept. 3 Clash at the Castle pay-per-view that will run inside Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
