WWE fans were shocked when the company split up the IIconics and placed them both on separate shows. The duo of Peyton Royce and Billie Kay had a natural chemistry going back to their friendship forming as teenagers in Australia, to achieving their dreams together.

Royce admitted on their podcast that she suggested the idea to Vince McMahon when discussing a singles future. The split would come faster than expected with the members of the IIconics just forming new teams. WWE ended up releasing both Royce and Kay less than a year after the breakup.

7 Rocky Johnson

The tag team run of Rocky Johnson and Tony Atlas peaked when they won the WWE Tag Team Championship together. Vince McMahon saw something special in each performer when pairing them together as Soul Patrol.

Both men had a connection with the audience, but they struggled to get along backstage. Johnson reported complained about Atlas showing up to events late and made it clear he’d prefer to work on his own. The one tag title run was all the promising team accomplished, before going in separate directions.

6 Hardcore Holly

WWE tried to create a unique family tag team when placing Hardcore Holly and Crash Holly together in the Attitude Era. The two wrestlers were not related, but WWE did a good job convincing fans the new character of Crash was the cousin of the company veteran.

Hardcore admitted the two didn’t get on the same page as a team during his various shoot interviews. Crash was known for having fun and partying after shows. Hardcore represented the exact opposite scenario of taking his job seriously, and made it known he didn’t want to be in the tag team act for too long.

5 Scott Steiner

WCW witnessed the Steiner Brothers becoming huge stars as a tag team. The duo of Rick and Scott were in the conversation for the greatest tag team in WCW history, with Harlem Heat as their main competition for that title.

Scott changed his look up in 1998 and started to discuss the potential of having a singles opportunity. Rick and Scott didn’t have any friction, but it was just time for them to try something new. The end of the team featured Scott betraying Rick to become part of the New World Order.

4 Davey Boy Smith

The issues between Davey Boy Smith and Dynamite Kid ended one of the best tag teams of the ‘80s faster than expected. WWE found success with the duo as the British Bulldogs until they quit, after Dynamite had a backstage incident that landed him in hot water.

Davey Boy trademarked the British Bulldogs name during their time together and decided to use it on his own when calling back WWE. The desire to return to the company without his partner was approved, when Smith signed a contract to have a singles run throughout the ‘90s.

3 Chris Harris

The incredible work of America’s Most Wanted made Chris Harris and James Storm the first breakout tag team in TNA. Both wrestlers showed potential as singles stars, but they were getting over strongly in the tag division in the company’s early stages.

Storm revealed that he felt Harris always wanted to start his singles career and it led to a premature breakup. Harris ended up hitting free agency and decided to sign with WWE. Storm claimed that the company showed interest in them coming together, but Harris wanted to sign on his own and flopped in the singles role.

2 Perry Saturn

The chemistry between Perry Saturn and John Kronus made The Eliminators one of the most successful ECW tag teams. Saturn has spoken about his relationship with Kronus falling apart throughout their ECW tenure. The duo went from close friends to wanting to separate from each other.

Saturn revealed how bad it got during a previous Reddit AMA:

“In the end we couldn't even sit in the same room together without arguing. In the end it was really hard.”

The WCW signing of Saturn saw him wanting to come alone and making it clear in negotiations to get the confirmation of moving into a singles role.

1 Cody Rhodes

WWE found success with the short-term team of Cody Rhodes and Goldust. The real-life half-brothers had a couple of classic matches against The Shield to win tag team gold and get revenge against The Authority for disrespecting their family.

Dustin Rhodes was content to have a noteworthy role again teaming with his brother for the first time, but Cody wanted to be a singles star. The end of the tag run was something Cody requested in hopes of it improving his star power. Unfortunately, his run with the Stardust gimmick couldn’t get him to the position he wanted in the company.
