WWE announced earlier this week that John Cena will make his long-awaited return on the June 27 edition of Monday Night Raw, which will run in Laredo, Texas.

Cena's return will take place a month before SummerSlam 2022, which is set for July 30 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. The 16-time World Champion last wrestled at SummerSlam 2021 in Paradise, Nevada — losing a Universal Championship match to Roman Reigns via pinfall.

Plans can always change. But at this time, it sounds like WWE is planning to feature Cena on the SummerSlam 2022 card as well.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), Dave Meltzer wrote that although nothing has been confirmed, "the talk in wrestling is that it will be Cena vs. Theory at SummerSlam with the idea that working with Cena will bring Theory up to a higher level."

Back in April, it was reported that WWE chairman Vince McMahon views Theory as "a John Cena." Theory recently expressed his wish to defend the United States Championship against Cena. Just last week, Cena stated that Theory was his favorite wrestler while adding that the 24-year-old needs an Attitude Adjustment.

The seeds have been planted for the highly-anticipated Cena vs. Theory match. Again, McMahon can easily flip the switch and decide to go elsewhere with both superstars at the last minute. Perhaps the June 27 episode will give us another major hint regarding a Cena-Theory showdown.

Other Rumored Matches For SummerSlam 2022

Raw Women's Champion Bianca Belair will defend her title against Rhea Ripley at the July 2 Money in the Bank pay-per-view. Earlier this week, Meltzer suggested that Belair and Becky Lynch will square off again at SummerSlam. These two met at SummerSlam 2021 (Lynch won that match to become the SmackDown Women's Champion) and WrestleMania 38, (Belair defeated Lynch to become the Raw Women's Champion).

On top of that, Meltzer reported that the current plan is for Reigns to defend his championship against Randy Orton at SummerSlam. We'll just have to wait and see how it plays out, but Belair vs. Lynch, Reigns vs. Orton and Cena vs. Theory would all be SummerSlam-caliber matches.
