The Calgary Flames have locked up newly-acquired center Elias Lindholm to a six-year contract extension, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

After failing to agree on a contract extension with the Carolina Hurricanes, Lindholm and defenceman Noah Hanifin were traded to the Flames in exchange for blueliner Dougie Hamilton, forward Micheal Ferland and prospect Adam Fox. As of now, Hanifin - an RFA - has yet to sign an extension with Calgary.

The trade immediately reunited Hanifin and Lindholm with head coach Bill Peters - who left Carolina after this season to take on the Flames' bench boss gig. Calgary made a handful of changes this offseason after a late-season collapse that saw them miss the playoffs for the second time in three years.

The 23-year-old Lindholm will have a can't-miss assignment as the center of Calgary's top line, which includes two superstars in Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan - who have yet to play with a bonafide no. 1 center.

Lindholm scored 16 goals and 44 points for Carolina last season, but it's no kept secret that he's capable of scoring more, and he'll have the linemates to do it. Lindholm's career-highs in goals and points remain 17 and 45, respectively.

Calgary will now focus on extending the 21-year-old Hanifin, who was drafted with the fifth pick by Carolina in 2015. A smooth-skating blueliner, Hanifin scored 10 goals and 32 points last season, and he should fit in nicely on a team that boasts Mark Giordano, Travis Hamonic and T.J. Brodie on its blue line.

PerCapFriendly.com, the Flames have just over $8 million remaining in salary cap space. Given Hanifin's age and the fact he hasn't reached his full ceiling yet, Calgary may look to sign him to a bridge deal, setting up the opportunity to pay him much more in a couple of years.

Lindholm's deal is done, now it's just a matter of finishing up Hanifin's.
