The Los Angeles Rams have signed wide receiver Brandin Cooks to a five-year contract extension worth $80, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The 24-year-old was acquired by the Rams on Apr. 3 in a trade with the New England Patriots. Los Angeles also landed a fourth-round pick and sent first and sixth-round picks to the Pats for Cooks.

Coming off his third consecutive 1,000-yard season, Cooks has morphed into one of the NFL's premier deep ball threats. He averaged a whopping 16.6 yards per catch for the Patriots last year. In total, Cooks racked up 65 receptions for 1,082 yards and seven touchdowns.

A key part of the Patriots offense - who lost star wideout Julian Edelman to a torn ACL in 2017 pre-season - Cooks became Tom Brady's best wide receiver. Cooks' skills were on display in the AFC Championship Game, where he constantly beat elite corners Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Cooks racked up six catches for 100 yards, leading the Patriots to Super Bowl 52.

However, Cooks was knocked out of the second quarter after getting hit by Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins. Cooks would not return, and the Eagles went on to win 41-33.

Heading into the last year of his contract, Cooks was traded to the Rams, as head coach Bill Belichick is known for trading away big-named players for draft picks, if he knows there are no plans to sign them long-term. He acquired two valuable picks in Cooks, while Rams quarterback Jared Goff has another impact player to work with.

The Rams are coming off an 11-win season and NFC West title. With Cooks joining a dangerous offense that also includes running back Todd Gurley and 2017 rookie standout Cooper Kupp, L.A. could own the best offense in the NFL next season.
