It appears that the proposed 2019 Ring Of Honor date at Madison Square Garden is no longer happening thanks to WWE.

For as long as WWE has been around, the company's spiritual home has been Madison Square Garden. Bruno Sammartino defended the WWE Championship there for years and years, it was the home of the first-ever WrestleMania, it's basically on most wrestlers' bucket lists to compete there. Due to WWE's relationship with the arena, it was assumed that you'd have to be an employee of Vince McMahon to do so.

The tides seem to be changing though. WWE still visits MSG, usually twice a year, but normally for live events rather than a Raw or a PPV. Nowadays when they ride through New York City, their arena of choice is the far newer Barclays Center. That seems to have opened the door for other wrestling promotions to step in, something pretty much unheard of in the past.

Mexican promotion AAA is due to hold an event at MSG later this year and news broke last week that Ring Of Honor had penciled in a date with the iconic arena for some time in 2019. However, according to PW Insider, those plans have fallen through. Reports are suggesting that MSG has backed out of putting on an ROH show following "communications from WWE".

There has been a lot of talk about the wrestling world becoming more close-knit recently. Earlier this week WWE featured Impact Wrestling footage during their WWE 24 special about The Hardy Boyz, even giving a shout out to the Global Wrestling Network at the end. If they have indeed spoken with MSG about pairing up with other wrestling promotions though, that seems pretty petty.

Even though the ROH show seems to be off for now, at the time of typing this AAA will still be putting on a show at the iconic MSG. That will be a significant milestone in AAA history and also another big step for wrestling in general. Perhaps MSG will rethink their decision about ROH if the AAA show goes well and going forward we will see a lot more wrestling at Madison Square Garden.
