In three weeks, longtime rivals Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar will meet at the SummerSlam 2022 pay-per-view in a Last Man Standing match for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

WWE is hyping this as the last-ever showdown between the two wrestling legends. The advertisement for the match at WWE.com starts off with, "One last time. One last match. Last Man Standing." Given how much WWE has relied on this rivalry over the last few years, it's obviously difficult to think that this will really be the conclusion of their program.

For fans of the Reigns-Lesnar rivalry, don't get too worried. Unsurprisingly, WWE may very well end up coming back to this program if the circumstances call for it in the future. In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), Dave Meltzer reported that whole "One last time" stipulation may not actually stick:

"There has been a promotional push of this match as a last time ever meeting between the two, but we are told that they don’t think that’s official because what if we need it again due to an injury situation or another situation where they have someone fall out of a match like Orton did here and Lesnar is called because it’s such a big show."

Lesnar Reigns on WWE Smackdown

SummerSlam 2022 will mark the sixth one-on-one meeting between Reigns and Lesnar (if you exclude their WrestleMania 31 match that was interrupted by Seth Rollins). They also faced off at WrestleMania 34, The Greatest Royal Rumble, SummerSlam 2018, Crown Jewel 2021 and WrestleMania 38. Lesnar took the first two meetings, but Reigns responded with three consecutive victories.

We've Heard This Before

John Cena and the Rock headlined WrestleMania 28 in 2012. The tagline for that event? Once in a Lifetime. And yet, those two men would go on to headline Wrestlemania 29 one year later.

Super Show-Down 2018 was headlined by Triple H vs. The Undertaker, and WWE hyped it as the final meeting between those two. And yet, Triple H and Shawn Michaels (as D-Generation X) would go on to face Undertaker and Kane (The Brothers of Destruction) in a winning effort at Crown Jewel one month later. The lesson here? Take it as a grain of salt whenever WWE builds up a match as the final showdown between two all-time greats.
