Roman Reigns may be the top superstar in WWE right now, but the company will reportedly cut back on his schedule — even for some pay-per-view shows — over the long run.

There was speculation that Reigns could retire following a babyface promo at Saturday's house show in Trenton, New Jersey. Reigns told the crowd that he was beginning a new phase in his career and thanked the fans for their support. But as previously noted, Reigns recently signed a new WWE contract that includes a reduced working schedule. Under the new deal, Reigns will be working less house shows. That's supposedly why he shared the kind message for the fans in Trenton.

Dave Meltzer provided more details on Reigns' contract and upcoming schedule in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required). Citing a source, Meltzer reported that Reigns will be working less pay-per-views going forward, though he'll be used at the major events and stadium shows:

"There was a report that he had agreed to do only the major PPV shows per year, meaning largely the planned stadium shows and Saudi Arabia shows. One person in the promotion with knowledge of the deal said the first report of six wasn’t exactly accurate but close, and his year the number of stadium shows and Saudi Arabia shows would be eight."

Roman Reigns WrestleMania 38

Meltzer added that Reigns will not be featured on the HIAC pay-per-view that will run on June 5. On top of that, Reigns' next scheduled title defense is at Money in the Bank 2022 against Drew McIntyre. That show will take place on July 2 at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada.

Roman Reigns Head Of The Table

Reigns will surely be featured at SummerSlam 2022, another stadium pay-per-view that will run on July 30 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. The Tribal Chief has also been advertised for the Sept. 3 Clash at the Castle pay-per-view that will run at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

WWE Better Push New Stars Now

If Reigns isn't going to wrestle at every WWE pay-per-view, then it's on the company to work more with other main event-caliber stars. Seth Rollins, Bianca Belair, Drew McIntyre, Cody Rhodes, Ronda Rousey, Edge and Becky Lynch are among the major talents who are capable of headlining any WWE pay-per-view. WWE can't just rely on Reigns to be the main star of every pay-per-view, so this is their opportunity to further grow the WWE main event scene.
