If WWE officials get their way, the dream match between Roman Reigns and The Rock will finally take place in eight months.

For several years now, many fans have called for WWE to run a match between the two cousins. Though he hasn't wrestled a match in six years, The Rock has made occasional appearances for WWE since leaving the promotion to embark on a successful career in Hollywood. Though he announced his retirement from pro wrestling three years ago, The People's Champion has expressed interest in facing the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion.

Previous reports have indicated that WWE wants to run this match. But The Rock's filming schedule, XFL duties and other factors make it difficult to book well in advance.

But in an update, Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t WrestleTalk) that Reigns vs. The Rock remains WWE's plan for WrestleMania 39. However, the match isn't officially confirmed.

"It’s the plan. It’s 100% the plan for this year (WrestleMania 39). But the idea is, it’s the plan if he can do it," Meltzer said. "We’re still months away, months and months away. So many opportunities and things like that may come up that are far more important than WrestleMania."

WWE is pushing Reigns through the roof as an all-time great. The Tribal Chief is the longest-reigning Universal Champion in history (he'll hit the two-year mark on Aug. 30), for starters. He's also closing in on 1,000 days since his clean loss (to King Corbin at the TLC 2019 pay-per-view).

Certainly, a WrestleMania showdown with arguably the greatest wrestler of all time would go a long way in further strengthening the historically dominant run that Reigns has enjoyed over the last two years.

The Rock's Last Official WWE Match

The Rock's last WWE match took place at WrestleMania 32. At the last minute, he and Erick Rowan agreed to a singles bout. The People's Champion soundly defeated Rowan in just six seconds, but he was quickly surrounded by Rowan, Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman. But The Rock was rescued by John Cena (sidelined with an injury at the time), and the two legends worked together in fighting the trio off.
