Shane McMahon's latest run with the WWE ended on a sour and unexpectedly quick note.

As previously noted, Shane O'Mac reportedly garnered plenty of backstage heat for largely booking the 30-man Royal Rumble match around himself. It was also reported that Shane had creative disagreements with his father, WWE chairman Vince McMahon, as well as Royal Rumble match winner Brock Lesnar. This led to Shane and WWE parting ways just days after the pay-per-view.

Citing a source, WrestleVotes reported that McMahon's "spot" in the WrestleMania 38 card "was to be positioned near the top." WrestleVotes added that WWE is now seeking another "major attraction" for The Show of Shows aside from the championship matches. It was also noted that the card for WrestleMania "is still in complete flux."

Shane has been a mainstay for the WrestleMania scene since his return to television in 2016. He faced The Undertaker at WrestleMania 32, AJ Styles at WrestleMania 33, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn (in a tag team match with Daniel Bryan) at WrestleMania 34, The Miz at WrestleMania 35 and Braun Strowman at WrestleMania 37.

Shane McMahon released by WWE

There are two confirmed matches for WrestleMania 38: Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship and Ronda Rousey vs. Charlotte Flair for the SmackDown Women's Championship. The winner of the six-woman Elimination Chamber match at the Feb. 19 pay-per-view will earn a Raw Women's title match at WrestleMania.

WWE Has Limited Options In Replacing Shane McMahon

It'll be interesting to see how WWE goes about replacing Shane O'Mac. Goldberg's WWE contract will expire after his Elimination Chamber match with Roman Reigns, so a new deal will need to be reached before WrestleMania. Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker are retired from in-ring work, and John Cena doesn't appear to be in the WrestleMania 38 plans.

Shane's departure from WWE further complicates WWE's shortage in potential nostalgic performers for WrestleMania. This further enhances WWE's need to re-sign Goldberg, as Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio.
