Heels are the intended villains of pro-wrestling and they live to irritate and agitate the fans through any means necessary. This includes underhanded tactics, manipulation, and even taking shots at the hometown team, which is admittedly low-hanging fruit.

These villains carry the bulk of the marketing responsibility in an ongoing rivalry, as it is up to them to generate hype by talking all the wrong things and pushing the right buttons. However, the very best heels do not simply resort to eliciting cheap heat; they go above and beyond the ambit of mortality quite often and do so with sickening delight. This includes beating up the family members of their opponents and airing their dirty laundry for the world to see, all to get a mental edge as they must win by any means necessary.

A good heel gets the crowd to invest hope in the opposing babyface, wishing and cheering that the hero would silence the bad guy who is looking to make their life miserable. However, a great heel makes the crowd want to jump over the railing and punch them on the spot. These supervillains can elicit a thunder of boos from the crowd with a simple look towards them and every word induces a murderous rage upon the fans. Over the years, there have been a number of great heels but one name that does not get its due appreciation, especially considering the year, is Shawn Michaels in the year 2005.

Of course, who would want to boo Shawn Michaels in 2005? The Showstopper had been a beloved babyface ever since he returned in the summer of 2002 and performed as if he had never lost a step. However, Michaels did have a short stint as a heel in 2005 in order to build up a match against Hulk Hogan at SummerSlam of the same year.

Michaels' Was Forced To Turn Heel

According to the reports at that time, the two legends were expected to work a face vs. face trilogy of matches, with Michaels ultimately winning the feud. Hulk Hogan reportedly did not like the aspect of two babyfaces fighting each other and suggested that Michaels should be the villain of the match. Then, Hogan came down with knee problems. The trilogy was scrapped and the Hulkster was booked to win the only match.

Perhaps this angered Michaels as after his heel turn, the Showstopper went on to cut blistering promos against Hogan, blending kayfabe and reality by referencing that Hogan was not the superhero everyone thought he was in real life. When RAW came to Montreal, however, Michaels went out and cut possibly the best heel promo of all time, outdoing the Larry King skit the week before.

Montreal had not forgotten or forgiven Michaels for his involvement in the Montreal Screwjob. The moment his music blared throughout the arena, fans drowned out the theme song with a loud chorus of boos and jeers. HBK walked out with the smile that he "lost" and flashed a conniving grin every chance that he got. As soon as he got to the ring, Michaels stalled as much as he could, glancing around and smirking at the crowd before beginning with a now-iconic quip:

“Who’s your daddy, Montreal?”

The promo was supposed to build up his match with Hogan. But given the place, Michaels could not help but cut into old wounds, as a great heel would. The first couple of minutes were all about Michaels expressing joy at the fact that he had screwed Bret. As Michaels rambled on and on, Hart’s music began and the crowd blew the roof off the place with a deafening cheer. Unfortunately for them, the music eventually came to an end without Hart making an appearance; Michaels simply laughed, mockingly asking if he had raised the fans' hopes up a little bit.

He then moved on to Hulk Hogan, promising the Hulkster that he was going to do to him what he had done to Bret. This time, 'Real American' rang out through the arena and the crowd heaved a sigh, as Michaels was going to get what was coming to him.

Once again, nothing happened, aside from Michaels mocking the fans for their gullibleness. Now that he was done with trolling and torturing the Montreal crowd, Michaels went on to shoot from the hip, claiming that much like Hart, Hogan did not display the same morality when the cameras were off and that there was not a genuine bone in the Hulkster's body. After promising that he would defeat Hogan at SummerSlam, HBK brought Hart up one last time as a victim of his works, finally ending the promo to another storm of boos.

Shawn Michaels' Montreal Promo Has Achieved Legendary Status

Shawn Michaels is widely regarded as one of the greatest in-ring performers of all time, and rightfully so. However, this enormous accolade sometimes overshadows the fact that Michaels is also terrific on the mic when called upon. His work with D-Generation X in 1997 was unbelievable in terms of generating heat, and during that fateful night in Montreal, Michaels emulated his old self just enough to cut possibly the best heel promo in the history of the company.
