Rumors that Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba are not seeing eye-to-eye have been rubbished by Manchester United officials.
Before the 2018/19 Premier League season had even begun, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho was already playing down his side's chances of challenging for the title this time around. Pre-season didn't go well for the Red Devils. During the team's tour of the United States, it lost 4-1 to Premier League rivals Liverpool. The United manager was extremely vocal about his displeasure with certain players.
Despite those summer woes, United got its new season off to a winning start against Leicester City last Friday. The two sides officially opened the new Premier League season at Old Trafford and United left 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw. Although it was a man of the match performance from a goal scoring Pogba, there are rumors that all is not well between the club captain and Mourinho.
Pogba made some comments after Friday's match that suggest he isn't happy at Old Trafford. After hinting that he isn't happy, he told one reporter "there are things that I cannot say otherwise I will get fined." It has also been reported by Sky Sports that Pogba has been rumored to have said that if Mourinho wishes to talk to him formally from here on in, he will have to do it through his agent.
United officials have been quick to respond to the rift rumors, labeling them as "absolute nonsense" and reassuring fans that the relationship between Mourinho and Pogba is a good one. However, if they have fallen out, it may be due to the reports that United rejected a bid for Pogba from Barcelona as the transfer window came to a close in the UK. It was a player plus cash deal that would have seen two players coming the other way.
Manchester United may have three points on the board after one Premier League game but it's pretty clear that all is not well at the club. While the problems between Pogba and Mourinho are not confirmed, there is almost definitely an issue when it comes to the boss and Anthony Marital. Pogba's fellow Frenchman was expected to leave the club during the summer following Mourinho's criticism of him for not returning to training sooner after the birth of his child. That switch obviously never came and Martial did not play in United's win over Leicester last Friday.
