Bigger companies acquiring smaller companies is a big part of the business landscape. Wrestling is no different. Just this year, AEW acquired Ring of Honor and is trying to make those two companies work synchronously. If you go way back, WWE was built on the back of Vince McMahon acquiring territories and the biggest stars from each, then turning his brand of pro wrestling into a national industry juggernaut.

WWE might not be done.

WWE Co-CEO Stephanie McMahon recently expressed interest in accruing more tuck-in acquisitions (smaller companies) as part of WWE's overall business strategy. In an appearance at Wells Fargo 2022 TMT Summit, McMahon suggest they are looking at different companies or promotions to acquire, but noted that any potential acquisition has "to align with our capabilities." Among the ideas she tossed out there, boxing was suggested.

Stephanie McMahon Logan Paul WWE

No, Stephanie didn't just hint that WWE might look to acquire other wrestling promotions. They might dip their toes into the boxing world and, frankly, it makes a lot of sense. While the history of WWE branching out into other lanes hasn't always gone well -- see bodybuilding and the XFL as monumental flops -- boxing is a bit more of a natural fit for the sports entertainment company. Not only is the boxing industry somewhat broken, but celebrity boxing matches seem to have taken over front-page discussion in the genre. WWE has a couple of the big names involved already in that directional shift on their payroll. Logan Paul and Jake Paul are two of the biggest names to work big-gate PPV boxing matches in recent years and they're already working with WWE.

Can WWE Pull This Off?

Stephanie said she hopes to "replicate" the same success that her father and great-grandfather Roderick James "Jess" McMahon had before her. He found success promoting boxing prior to Vince McMahon Sr. focusing just on professional wrestling after World War II. She believes WWE can find success "in other areas, with boxing being an idea of one of them."

It will take some time and a closer examination of the industry that is in many ways a mess, but it sounds like there's an opportunity there.
