Wrestling is at its best when building captivating feuds and having great matches to pay it off. The all-time great memories typically featured performers getting both scenarios to merge perfectly. However, one of the two lacking will ultimately ruin the other. WCW witnessed this with their strength in storytelling and weakness in the big matches.

The Monday Night Wars saw Eric Bischoff signing every major name on the free agent market with the hopes of having an all-star roster to surpass WWE for good. Unfortunately, it also created problems of aging performers or a lack of chemistry for many bigger matches. The following WCW feuds had potential but failed due to an awful match.

10 Hulk Hogan Vs Ultimate Warrior (Halloween Havoc 1998)

WCW had a lot of hope for Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan bringing back their feud from WWE in 1998. Eric Bischoff signed Warrior with a lot of optimism since he was the remaining WWE Golden Era legend with Randy Savage, Roddy Piper and Hogan already there.

Halloween Havoc 1998 was the destination of the big match after a couple of months building it up. Warrior having supernatural powers was polarizing, but there was still a chance for it to work. WCW witnessed all fan interest ending when Warrior and Hogan had a stinker.

9 Sting Vs Vampiro (Great American Bash 2000)

Sting Vampiro

The idea of Sting feuding with Vampiro led to fans hoping to see a bigger payoff of a new star being made. WCW rarely had major feuds between the established main eventers and rising stars, so this felt refreshing and cool with the common thread of them having face paint.

The Great American Bash 2000 featured the Human Torch match stipulation of the winner having to set the loser on fire. Sting getting replaced by a stunt double and being set on fire and thrown off the Titantron was too ridiculous of an ending after a bad match to ruin the feud.

8 Goldberg Vs Sid Vicious (Halloween Havoc 1999)

Goldberg Vs Sid Vicious

The original concept for the Goldberg vs Sid Vicious feud made more sense than fans would realize looking back at WCW. Sid returned after his WWE run with an undefeated streak claiming he was going to pass Goldberg’s win record.

WCW had Sid squashing the cruiserweights or lower card acts to boost his streak. Sid comically would attack five wrestlers and claim his undefeated streak was a lot higher than it was. The first match coming at Halloween Havoc 1999 completely disappointed to sink the interest. Goldberg won to end Sid’s streak but it ended via knockout to add some controversy.

7 Randy Savage Vs Dennis Rodman (Road Wild 1999)

Many current fans will look back at Dennis Rodman in WCW and assume it was a trainwreck. However, Rodman was among the most successful celebrity wrestlers and added a lot to the WCW product as a member of the New World Order.

Things changed in 1999 for Rodman’s final WCW comeback when the nWo no longer existed. WCW placed Rodman in a feud with Randy Savage to play off both men being unpredictable. The match was a disaster to take away any interest from fans going into Road Wild 1999 with optimism.

6 Jake Roberts Vs Sting (Halloween Havoc 1992)

WCW got in their own way with a bad idea for the match stipulation of their Halloween Havoc 1992 main event. Sting and Jake Roberts had a very underrated feud that had fans genuinely anticipating their big PPV match as an attraction.

The show featured WCW spinning a wheel with various stipulations to decide the Sting vs Roberts match. The Coal Miner’s Glove match may have been the worst option, and the wheel landed on that. Sting and Roberts had a weak match that failed to live up to the feud.

5 Hulk Hogan Vs The Giant (Halloween Havoc 1995)

Hulk Hogan had the idea to have The Giant debut as Andre the Giant’s long-lost son getting revenge against him. The Andre aspect was terrible, but a massive rookie having his first match against the biggest star in wrestling was different.

Fans didn’t even get to pretend to be excited during the big night of Halloween Havoc 1995. Things started strange enough when they had a sumo monster truck race on the roof with Giant falling off. The match was somehow worse as Giant won via DQ with a weird Jimmy Hart heel turn and The Yeti debuting to make it crazier.

4 Bret Hart Vs Goldberg (Starrcade 1999)

Vince Russo taking over WCW saw Bret Hart getting his biggest push in the company. Bret won the WCW Championship at the end of a tournament and saw Goldberg becoming his first major challenger heading into Starrcade 1999.

Two major stars facing off for the first time in the main event of the biggest show of the year always creates interest. Bret could have carried Goldberg in the right scenario, but the match was short and pointless with another Montreal Screwjob imitation finish ruining it.

3 Roddy Piper Vs Hulk Hogan (SuperBrawl 1997)

WCW benefited from using WWE’s history quite a few times during the Monday Night Wars. Roddy Piper signed with WCW specifically to enter another chapter of his legendary feud with the now heel Hulk Hogan leading the New World Order.

The promos between Hogan and Piper were outstanding to create attraction matches on PPV. Unfortunately, none of their in-ring performances lived up to the expectations as they were too old at this point. Their second match at SuperBrawl 1997 featured Hogan winning through his usual cheating tactics with the nWo helping out.

2 Scott Hall Vs Kevin Nash (Halloween Havoc 1998)

Kevin Nash Vs Scott Hall

The Steiner Brothers and Harlem Heat were the two best overall teams in WCW history for longevity and consistency. However, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall were the most dominant team during their stretch together as The Outsiders.

WCW booked Nash and Hall just as dominant in the tag division as they protected Hulk Hogan as the WCW Champion. Their eventual feud felt like a big deal given how much fans invested in them. Halloween Havoc 1998 gave us their biggest match ending in embarrassing fashion with Hall pretending to be drunk as per WCW creative.

1 Sting Vs Hulk Hogan (Fall Brawl 1999)

The feud between Hulk Hogan and Sting had two different chapters in WCW. Everyone talks about the Starrcade 1997 match ruining their iconic feud, but it didn’t take away from the good things. This was still the most financially successful WCW rivalry and fans were still invested in a rematch.

Hogan was a face using the red and yellow look later in his WCW run when entering another feud with Sting. The story featured a wild heel turn of Sting cheating to beat Hogan. This was a fascinating idea in theory for a great finish, but WCW overbooked the match with five other wrestlers involved.
