Not every pay-per-view can deliver the goods when it comes to great matches and solid booking, but those kinds of misfires look even worse when the card is stacked with a strong array of wrestlers. In an era like 1990s World Championship Wrestling, which boasted a ridiculously stacked roster by the latter half of the decade, a weak show felt even more inexcusable.

Throughout the 1990s, WCW put on loads of weak shows with great lineups, so let’s take a look at 10 such pay-per-views, some of which went down in history thanks to some infamous matches.

10 Starrcade 1994 (12/271994)

The Butcher Vs Hulk Hogan

The year 1994 brought the arrival of Hulk Hogan from WWE, a major coup for WCW but also an assurance that Hogan would remain at the top of every PPV he was willing to show up for. The disappointing Starrcade ‘94 is best remembered for the main event, wherein Hogan took on former friend The Butcher (a.k.a. former WWE star Brutus Beefcake) in a match that reeked of ego. Other big matchups included The Nasty Boys taking on Harlem Heat and Big Van Vader beating Jim Duggan for the US Title, but the arguable best match is a midcard TV Title bout between Johnny B. Badd and Arn Anderson.

9 Halloween Havoc 1999 (10/24/1999)

By 1999, gears were falling off of the WCW machine, a trend made even worse with the hiring of ex-WWE writer Vince Russo, as seen in Halloween Havoc ‘99. There are some matchups on paper that seem promising like Diamond Dallas Page vs. Ric Flair, Eddie Guerrero vs. Perry Saturn, and even Bret Hart vs. Lex Luger, but the matches failed to impress. Of course, this being Vince Russo era WCW, there are shenanigans like Hulk Hogan lying down for Sting as a worked shoot and a main event bout between Goldberg and Sting that lasts all of three minutes.

8 Uncensored 1995 (3/19/1995)

WCW Uncensored 1995: Hulk Hogan vs. Big Van Vader

Introduced in 1995, WCW’s Uncensored pay-per-view was the Extreme Rules of its time, a pay-per-view where most of the matches were gimmick matches, including a “Martial Arts Match” and a Falls Count Anywhere tag team bout. The most infamous, of course, was the “King of the Road Match,” a pre-taped affair where Dustin Rhodes and Blacktop Bully fought in the back of a moving truck.

While matches between Randy Savage and Avalanche and Big Bubba Rogers and Sting ultimately disappointed, the nadir of the show was easily the main event Leather Strap match between Hulk Hogan and Big Van Vader, which Hogan bafflingly won by dragging Ric Flair across all four ring posts.

7 WCW Bash at the Beach 1998 (7/12/1998)

Dennis Rodman Vs DDP

The 1998 edition of Bash at the Beach promised some huge matches, like Raven vs. Saturn in a Raven’s Rules match, Eddie Guerrero vs. Chavo Guerrero in a Hair vs. Hair match, and Bret Hart challenging Booker T for the US Title. Little on the card, however, turned out all that great — even the exciting prospect of Goldberg and Curt Hennig clashing lasted like four minutes — and the big attraction matches were celebrity affairs. Not only did Kevin Greene take on The Giant, but the main event involved NBA stars Karl Malone and Dennis Rodman competing in a tag match against one another.

6 Starrcade 1997 (12/28/1997)

Hulk Hogan Sting Starrcade 1997

Starrcade ‘97 went down in history as one of the most disappointing pay-per-views of all time thanks to its inability to stick the landing of the Sting vs. nWo storyline, with its potentially botched ending. But the rest of the card seemed awesome too, including several big WCW vs. nWo matches and solid midcard matchups like DDP vs. Curt Hennig, yet nothing really transcended middling status. Even the Cruiserweight Title opener between Eddie Guerrero and Dean Malenko — among some of the greatest ECW matches of all time — didn’t live up to its potential.

5 Road Wild 1997 (8/9/1997)

Rey Mysterio vs. Konnan at Road Wild 1997

Held at a motorcycle rally for some reason, the undercard of Road Wild offered a Mexican Death Match between Rey Mysterio Jr. and Konnan along with a very random matchup between Ric Flair and Syxx. Higher on the card, The Giant scored a win over Randy Savage while The Steiner Brothers fought The Outsiders to a DQ finish. Then there’s the main event, where Lex Luger — on an unprecedented hot streak as WCW’s top babyface opposing the nWo — dropped the world title to Hollywood Hogan only five days after winning it.

4 WCW/nWo Fall Brawl 1998 (9/13/1998)

nWo Wolfpac v Team WCW v nWo Hollywood Fall Brawl 1998 Cropped

In 1998, it seemed like WCW couldn’t not deliver a disappointing PPV, with Fall Brawl being considered one of the worst of the year. The first handful of matches set the show on the wrong foot, including a brother vs. brother match between Rick and Scott Steiner that ended in a No Contest. The bright spots on this card are few, amounting to a Raven’s Rules match between Perry Saturn and Raven, and Juventud Guerra defending the Cruiserweight belt against Silver King.

Then there’s the War Games match. In prior years, this would be a highlight, but the 1998 edition of the iconic cage match is notoriously reviled by fans. This match marked Warrior’s in-ring debut in WCW, which amounted to a lot of tricks and gimmickry and hardly an entertaining pro wrestling match.

3 WCW Uncensored 1999 (3/14/1999)

Hogan vs Flair

If fans watched the entirety of Uncensored ‘99, they’d start off thinking a pretty good show was in order, given the Billy Kidman vs. Mikey Whipwreck Cruiserweight Championship opener. Unfortunately, the rest of the show would disabuse that notion with massive disappointments like Kevin Nash obliterating Rey Mysterio Jr. and even a Dog Collar match between Perry Saturn and Chris Jericho not turning out as well as one would imagine. This is a show with an infamously hated main event: the First Blood Steel Cage Match between Hollywood Hogan and Ric Flair, one of those classic WCW main events where shenanigans take the place of enjoyable pro wrestling.

2 Starrcade 1991 (12/29/1991)

The BattleBowl battle royale at Starrcade 1991

While many consider the 1994 edition to be the worst one, it has some legit competition in Starrcade ‘91 thanks to the decision to center the entire night around the Lethal Lottery/BattleBowl tournament. Basically, the show consisted of randomly thrown-together tag teams fighting to enter a main event battle royal, so the show featured an impressive array of talent, including Rick Rude, Lex Luger, Jushin Thunder Liger, Big Van Vader, and Sting, among countless others. However, few of the matches failed to excite, including the concluding battle royale.

1 Halloween Havoc 1998 (10/25/1998)

Hulk Hogan Vs Ultimate Warrior Halloween Havoc 1998

When it comes to disastrous WCW pay-per-views, it’s hard to do worse than Halloween Havoc ‘98, which has been considered a black mark on the history of professional wrestling thanks to the Hollywood Hogan vs. Warrior singles match, an affair that amounted to a poorly wrestled ego trip that Dave Meltzer famously awarded a negative five-star rating. The Goldberg vs. Diamond Dallas Page World Title main event is solid but is outweighed by bouts like the Scott Hall vs. Kevin Nash non-match, and a shockingly disappointing Sting vs. Bret Hart dream match.
