In 1995, WCW was attempting to replicate the success of the hardcore ECW style. They thus created Uncensored, a pay-per-view event that was to be filled with special gimmick matches intended to push an extreme edge. From the beginning, Uncensored soon created a special place in WCW annals. Without fail, it was pretty much the worst PPV event of each year until WCW’s end.

It was amazing how Uncensored always managed to have some lousy matches. Now and then, they could have surprisingly good bouts, but those were surrounded by matches of terrible gimmicks and worse action. It was one thing for some lower-rung guys to have a bad match but more notable when the bigger stars put on a truly awful bout. Some matches are still regarded as the worst in WCW’s history so narrowing down the truly wretched is rough. However, these are the 10 worst bouts in WCW Uncensored history, and why this show was always a pain for fans.

10 Diamond Dallas Page Vs The Booty Man, 1996

WCW Uncensored 1996

Probably Ed Leslie’s worst gimmick (and that’s saying something), the Booty Man was feuding with Diamond Dallas Page in an “I Quit” match for both money and Page’s career on the line. Had this been seven or eight minutes, it wouldn’t have seemed so bad.

But for 16 minutes, the pair dragged on a lousy match that had little chemistry and a lot of stalling moves. Worse was that it was built as an I Quit match, but no attempts at submissions. In fact, Booty Man won by hitting a knee for a pin. An overlong match with a lousy ending was one of DDP’s worst in WCW.

9 Lex Luger Vs Scott Steiner, 1998

WCW Uncensored 1998

By 1998, Lex Luger was on a downward slide in WCW and this match did him no favors. Meant as a grudge match, it was an ugly affair with the two men brawling it out before they each tried their own submission move to little effect (Scott hadn’t quite mastered the Recliner yet).

Rick Steiner came out to distract his treacherous brother, allowing Luger to hit Scott with his “loaded forearm” and then get the pin. It was mercifully short but still an ugly battle for both men, which fit Uncensored.

8 Stevie Ray Vs Vincent, 1999

WCW Uncensored 1999

The weaker half of Harlem Heat vs the errand boy of the nWo. How could this not suck? Billed as a “Harlem Street Fight,” the pair tried for an epic brawl but lacked the skills to pull it off.

It was just ugly fighting through the crowd and then in the ring with the audience pretty dead for it. Horace Hogan tried to interfere with a slap jack with Stevie Ray hitting his finisher (also called the Slap Jack) for the pin. That was a mildly clever ending but not enough to overcome a bad match of poor workers.

7 Hulk Hogan vs Ric Flair, 2000

Flair vs Hogan Uncensored 2000

It’s hard to believe Hogan vs Flair was once considered a dream match. By 2000, the pair had done more than enough matches for fans to get tired of it and at their ages, no one wanted another. They certainly didn’t want it as a “Yappapi Strap Match,” but that’s what they got.

What followed was two men long past their prime wailing on each other with a strap while Lex Luger interfered.

It was ugly already before the ending of Hogan hitting the boot and leg drop for the pin…in a strap match. They couldn’t even keep to the rules to make this arguably the worst Hogan-Flair bout ever.

6 Jerry Flynn vs Ernest Miller & Sonny Onoo, 1999

WCW Uncensored 2000

Supposedly a “Karate match,” the trio put on a display unworthy of a B-movie. The idea was Ernest Miller working Jerry Flynn over then letting Onoo run in for a few cheap shots. That could have worked in theory, but in practice, it was a horribly dull match as even Flynn doing a plancha on the floor couldn’t get any interest.

It was the heels dominating, then out of nowhere, Flynn whipped Cat into Onoo and then pinned Onoo. Even as a forgettable bout, it was a painful affair as even comedy master Miller couldn’t make it entertaining.

5 Hulk Hogan Vs Randy Savage, 1998

Randy Savage v Hulk Hogan Uncensored 1998 Cropped

A decade earlier, Hogan vs Savage in a cage would have been a fantastic battle. By 1998, both men were far too old and hobbled for a good match. Yet it was astounding how bad this was, both men slow and plodding and barely able to move.

They went brawling outside, defeating the purpose of the cage, with Savage teasing a flying elbow from the cage but smartly avoiding it. Sting rappelled down only for Savage to turn on him, so there was never any winner at all while the fans were the losers of two men vainly trying to recreate their youth.

4 Arn Anderson Vs Johnny B. Badd, 1995

The first Uncensored show set the tone for all the ugliness to follow over the years. Arn Anderson and Johnny B. Badd were capable of good matches, but this was definitely not one of them. It was, in fact, absolutely horrific to watch as a “boxer vs wrestler” match with separate rounds.

Neither man seemed to get what the other was doing, leading to ugly fighting and Arn not being able to sell Badd’s punches and that’s without the ringing of the bell between rounds. Fittingly, it ended with Arn getting a bucket put over his head and hit by a knockout punch when the entire bout should have been thrown out.

3 Meng vs Jim Duggan, 1995

Meng vs Jim Duggan in WCW

Billed as a ”martial arts” battle, this was an insult to the sport. The first few minutes were spent with Jim Duggan teasing bowing but refusing and when he did, Meng kicked him. Each took turns knocking the other down to no effect and for a guy billed as a “killing machine,” Meng had a nerve pinch be his main hold.

There was no selling at all, with Meng shrugging off Duggan’s three-point clothesline and then hitting a simple boot to win it. It’s yet another ugly bout in a show filled with them.

2 Doomsday Cage Match, 1996

WCW's Doomsday Cage Match at Uncensored '96

With so much talent in this match, it should have been at least watchable. Instead, most of it was barely capable of being followed by fans. It was a triple cage match, with each cage lined with weapons and the idea of fighting their way to the lowest cage.

It was just a total mess, ugly fighting, and more ludicrous how Hogan and Savage were dominating despite being outnumbered nearly three to one. There was interference from the former Zeus and Lex Luger before the faces, not shockingly, won. It’s one of the worst main events in WCW history and thus belonged on this show.

1 Dustin Rhodes vs Blacktop Bully, 1995

King of the Road Match: Blacktop Bully vs. Dustin Rhodes

At least every other match took place in a wrestling ring. Instead, Dustin Rhodes and the Blacktop Bully fought on a huge trailer truck filled with bales going down an actual highway. The point was to climb across the cars and finally hit a horn with the two hitting each other with bales and hay and other stupid bits.

It was laughable seeing the truck roll along slowly, but it was wilder seeing both men bleeding which got them fired afterward. Bully won the “match” but fitting the first-ever WCW Uncensored bout is also its worst ever.
