WCW wrestlers were typically always on the same page to have a professional product. However, there were some rare instances of the performers breaking the script and doing something that wasn’t expected. Any time a wrestler breaks the script will provide controversy for the names involved and the company.

One criticism for WCW is that things were the wild, wild west compared to WWE's backstage environment. Even though the wrestlers weren’t breaking character every week, they felt a little more free to do so than in WWE. Most of the names involved got away with it due to the atmosphere there. The following moments of WCW talents not following the script sparked controversy.

10 Hulk Hogan Talking About WCW Being In Bad Shape

However, there were a few instances of both Hogan and Russo breaking the script. Hogan made an unexpected comment talking about why WCW was in bad shape. This was the first time WCW wrestlers talked about the company falling. Russo made his promo more personal than expected as well, to make things chaotic.

9 Goldberg Breaking Limo Window

Goldberg Punches Limo

WCW booked Goldberg to be an unstoppable monster, but he took that a little too seriously. Bret Hart forming the New World Order 2000 faction led to Goldberg trying to overcome them and return to the top babyface role.

A horrific segment between the two was meant to see Goldberg use a pipe to break a limousine window with nWo members inside. Goldberg lost the weapon and used his fist instead, resulting in a brutal injury. WCW missed Goldberg for almost half a year recovering from this injury.

8 Dustin Rhodes & Blacktop Bully Breaking No Blood Rule

Dustin Rhodes Vs Blacktop Bully King Of The Road

The King of the Road match may very well be the worst match stipulation in WCW history. Dustin Rhodes faced Blacktop Bully in a match taking place in the caged off trailer of an 18-wheeler truck. The match was impossible to follow, but the wrestlers breaking a huge rule is what everyone remembers.

WCW had a strict no bleeding policy with the wrestlers advised to never blade. Both wrestlers broke that rule here believing it would enhance the match. This was a rare instance of WCW going all the way with their punishment by firing Dustin and Blacktop.

7 Brian Pillman Scaring Bobby Heenan

How Brian Pillman Got Bobby Heenan To Drop A F-Bomb In WCW

The character change of Brian Pillman becoming the loose cannon allowed him to get away with breaking the rules within following the script. Pillman and Eric Bischoff agreed to him doing various things that appeared to break script.

Bobby Heenan was not aware of this when Pillman decided on the fly that he would grab the color commentator and hide behind him. A terrified Heenan cursed on air and got away from Pillman to truly sell the terror of his antics.

6 William Regal Making A Fool Of Goldberg

William Regal Vs Goldberg

WCW pushed Goldberg to the moon from the start of his career, and it skewed how he viewed the wrestling business compared to his peers. Goldberg developed a negative reputation for working stiff to hurt his opponents and not treating them with respect since he didn’t have to sell.

William Regal decided to teach him a lesson that night when placing Goldberg into moves that he wasn’t expecting. The match looked awkward compared to every other night Goldberg steam rolled over his opponents. WCW fired Regal for his conduct in that match not following the script.

5 Scott Steiner Insulting Kimberly Page In Shoot Promo

Midajah And Scott Steiner

There were a few instances of Scott Steiner breaking script when cutting shoot promos, but one crossed the line way too far. Steiner insulted Kimberly Page out of the blue with the tension between the two forming due to Kimberly ratting out Scott’s friend Tammy Sytch for having drugs in the WCW locker room.

Kimberly was verbally attacked by Steiner during live TV to completely embarrass her. Diamond Dallas Page confronted Steiner backstage for such an unprofessional action, and it led to a huge fight. Steiner brutally attacked DDP and did not even get suspended or fired for being in the wrong each time.

WCW had a rule in place that wrestlers were not allowed to go into the pool unless an approved spot. Kevin Nash showed zero care for that when he hilariously did a cannonball into the pool to get away from The Giant during a fun segment.

3 Meng & The Barbarian Attacking Commentator Lee Marshall During Battle Royal

Lee Marshall Attacked

WCW had a chaotic set up for the annual World War 3 battle royal with sixty wrestlers competing in three rings. There were a few different commentary teams set up around the ring one year with the goal of having all the action covered.

Unfortunately, this led to an unexpected moment of a few wrestlers brawling near a table with Lee Marshall and Larry Zbyszko in 1996. Meng and The Barbarian randomly started attacking Marshall when he fell during the brawl by kicking him repeatedly. Marshall was livid on commentary for having someone harm him with no warning.

2 Hulk Hogan Whipping David Flair Too Hard

Hulk Hogan and David Flair

David Flair was introduced to WCW right ahead of a major rivalry between his father Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan. The goal was for Hogan to get heat and add more intensity to Ric’s desire for revenge by having Hulk whip David with a belt as the New World Order held him down.

Things went awry when Hogan whipped David harder and longer than anyone expected with repeated shots. Ric was unhappy about it at the time during his tension with Hogan in WCW. The two have long made peace and become close friends since then.

1 Syxx Slapping Ric Flair

Syxx vs Ric Flair

The New World Order vs WCW story led to many mini programs of wrestlers directing feuding with each other. Ric Flair and Syxx aka X-Pac became each other’s main rival for a few months when Flair was looking for revenge against nWo members.

An unscripted moment between the two featured Syxx slapping Flair across the face during a promo exchange and getting chased. X-Pac has admitted this was unplanned and even apologized to Flair when interviewing him on a podcast.
