Vince McMahon has a belief about superstars that need to stick out in a crowd. The bigger and better the physique, the easier it is to stand out when you’re traversing the airports of the world. While that might not have been the philosophy of Eric Bischoff or other WCW Presidents, it certainly was a precedent over the years “down south.”

During the promotion’s quest to be able to compete with WWE, they did from time to time find a guy who was able to stick out in a crowd with a body that plenty of men wanted and female fans desired. They just weren’t very skilled in the actual ring!

9 Van Hammer

Van Hammer

Heavy Metal Van Hammer was supposed to be the savior of WCW if you hear him tell it. That clearly didn’t happen, no matter who tried filling his head with that nonsense.

But perhaps the reason Van Hammer didn’t do a very good job of saving anyone, much less the promotion is that he couldn’t work worth a damn. If he did have that kind of bad attitude, no one was going to really show him the ropes.

8 The Renegade

Renegade promo in WCW

Everything about The Renegade was done very wrong. First he was promoted to be an “ultimate” friend to Hulk Hogan. Second, he was booked to look and act like a certain Warrior. Thirdly, and perhaps most egregiously, the very green star was booked to defeat Arn Anderson for the TV Title.

But it was the very moment of the bait and switch that it wasn’t The Ultimate Warrior coming that made sure The Renegade was never going to get over. Fans saw right through the blatant ripoff and to top it off, Renegade was very green in the ring and clearly not ready to be a big star. The real Warrior would appear on WCW programming a few years later.

7 Alex Wright

Das-Wunderkind-Alex-Wrigh

Perhaps if the right group of trainers got to Alex Wright sooner, he wouldn’t been seen as a bit of a joke during latter day WCW. But that didn’t happen and any potential that Ric Flair had seen in him when he signed him fell by the wayside.

He put on some decent matches during his run. But between the dancing gimmick and Berlyn, he wasn’t going to get very far.

6 Lex Luger

Lex Luger As WCW Champion

You’ll hear just about ever industry insider talk about the massive potential of The Total Package Lex Luger. Throughout his career, he was a multi-time world champion and had a huge appeal from both the WCW and WWE fan bases. Now imagine that guy if he actually realized his full potential.

He already had that big blond babyface look and was a decent heel, but realizing his potential could have made him a true genre-crossing megastar.

5 Goldberg

Goldberg Tattoo

It probably didn’t happen that way on purpose but if you took the charismatic entrance of a guy like Warrior and the look of Stone Cold and you get the powerhouse Goldberg.

No matter how big of a star he became, he became one because of his look, his intensity, and two or three moves. It took years for even the most ardent Goldberg fans to start groaning whenever he appeared onscreen.

4 Paul Roma

Paul Roma 4 Horsemen

Did Paul Roma get a bad rap in the business or what? After traversing the WWE landscape, first as part of the pure babyface team - Young Stallions. After meandering around for a few years, he returned as part of the short-loved but underrated heel team Power & Glory.

However, in WCW, he was almost immediately given the keys to the kingdom and placed in with The Four Horsemen. But while Roma looked great and was decent in the ring, he was certainly not ready to be a member of the most elite group in wrestling.

3 Bryan Clark

Picture of Wrath in WCW

From Adam Bomb to Wrath to Bryan Clark, the big man cut an impress visage wherever he went. Obviously none of us would want to cross him in a dark alley, or anywhere else for that matter. But that doesn’t mean he had any memorable matches.

Well good ones anyway, along with Brian Adams, Kronik is remembered for clunkers like main eventing against Goldberg at Halloween Havoc and getting their keisters handed to them by The Brothers Of Destruction.

2 Buff Bagwell

Buff Bagwell

Ask nearly anyone who has gotten a job or two through networking - sometimes, it’s not what you know, it’s who. Having started out as The Handsome Stranger, Bagwell would meet the likes of Missy Hyatt and befriend The Stinger. His career was practically built on his looks and teaming with far more experienced big men.

The superstar clearly worked on himself and for his time had one of the best physiques in wrestling, but didn’t have much of an in-ring style.

1 El Gigante

El-Gigante

At eight feet tall, El Gigante started his sporting career as a center for The Atlanta Hawks. That was where he first met Ted Turner and was signed to WCW to be Billionaire Ted’s Andre The Giant type of attraction. But not only could the kind-hearted Jorge Gonzalez not work one single bit, he was hard to explain the business to.

Jim Ross tells a story of trying to coach him through a babyface promo. The giant had threatened that he would “kill” Ric Flair, and murder was not something that good guys do or even threaten to do.
