The rivalry between Eddie Guerrero and Chavo Guerrero was one of the few to take place in both WWE and WCW. Both companies hired Eddie for noteworthy roles and Chavo for depth, but it led to the uncle and nephew tandem having quite a few angles together. The combination of tag work together and feuds playing into their family history had different results.

WCW took it to a wilder direction that showed new aspects of both of their characters. WWE added more emotion and made it important to see their issues play out. Chavo clearly wouldn’t have been as successful without Eddie, but the success of Eddie benefited from having his nephew in storylines. WWE and WCW handling the feud differently makes it worth exploring.

The WCW Feud Between Chavo And Eddie Guerrero Was More Silly

The WCW chapter of the Eddie and Chavo Guerrero feud saw more comedy involved on the character side. Eddie had already turned heel and was channeling a vicious, more sinister side to his gimmick. Rey Mysterio already felt his wrath as a former best friend, but Eddie’s nephew would become the next former close one to enter a program with him.

WCW told the story of Eddie trying to bully and pressure his younger relative into following the same mindset as him. The first big match culminated with Eddie winning a stipulation that forced Chavo to be his servant and follow his orders. The running story of Eddie trying to force to Chavo to cheat led to Chavo slowly losing his mind in a comedic way that often backfired on Eddie.

Another big stipulation of a hair vs hair match between the two saw Chavo happy to lose and cutting his hair with a maniacal reaction that scared Eddie. The story progressed into Chavo doing things that got him in trouble with other wrestlers like Stevie Ray, and Eddie making the save out of hesitant love for his nephew. WCW ended it when Eddie was unhappy with his booking and formed the Latino World Order. Chavo’s comedic and silly moments were the main memories of this feud.

In WWE, Chavo And Eddie Guerrero Had A Big Match At The Royal Rumble

WWE decided to tell a much different story between Chavo and Eddie Guerrero with a new tone and deeper storytelling. Los Guerreros was the tag team act that helped them both reach new heights in WWE. Eddie got a chance to truly show his full character potential in a way that turned him from a hated heel to a beloved face with the same lying, cheating, and stealing.

The plan after their tag run started to reach the end was to place Eddie in a bigger role, moving him into the world title picture. Chavo became jealous of Eddie’s singles success and the fan response, leading to him turning on Eddie after Los Guerreros lost their final tag title shot to the Basham Brothers. A heartbreaking betrayal from Chavo towards Eddie ended with Chavo’s father Chavo Sr. joining him as a manager.

WWE used the sibling rivalry as part of the story and placed both Chavo Classic and Chavo Jr. in a feud against Eddie. The emotion involved added to the already growing momentum for Eddie with the WWE fan base. Eddie scored a decisive win over Chavo at the 2004 Royal Rumble PPV that showed him getting revenge and putting this emotional burden behind him.

Both Feuds Helped Chavo And Eddie Guerrero's Careers

The feuds of Eddie vs Chavo Guerrero in WWE and WCW each told different stories, but they were clearly beneficial each time. Chavo was an afterthought few fans even remembered on WCW TV until that Eddie feud showed some newfound personality. The heel character of Eddie also reached new depths by tormenting a younger relative out of a thirst for power and influence.

WWE utilized them in a much more relevant manner as Los Guerreros were part of the SmackDown Six tag feud. However, the breakup remains quite underrated since it helped them each reach their peak runs in wrestling. Chavo’s dad Chavo Classic remained with him as a manager to get one more run as Chavo Jr. became the top cruiserweight heel.

However, it was Eddie who benefited the most as this program ended his tag team run and gave him the right storyline to move into singles success. WWE wasted no time by having Eddie upset Brock Lesnar to become the WWE Champion just one month later. The legacies of both wrestlers and the entire Guerrero family deserves chapters for the WCW and WWE feuds alike, even if the WWE story was better.
