Rey Mysterio officially moving to SmackDown is a big development coming out of Friday night's episode of the show. Now a member of the blue brand roster, Rey is also the No. 1 contender for the Intercontinental Championship and will move on to face Gunther in a highly-anticipated match that mixes two very unique styles in a bout that could be one for the ages. The question about why WWE moved Rey over was addressed on the show, but behind the scenes, there's a more intriguing reason for the change.

Rey spoke with Triple H during Friday's episode and essentially quit WWE before The Head of Talent and Creative brought the veteran luchador into his office and convinced him to make a move from Mondays to Fridays. Rey refused to fight his son and the two sides figured this was the only logical solution. Behind the scenes, the reason has to do with longer-term plans for Rey and his son Dominik.

Tommy Dreamer and Andreas Hale discussed the move on "Busted Open Radio" and their belief is that WWE wants to move an eventual match between Rey and Dominik to WrestleMania. The only problem with that is that WrestleMania is months away. Keeping Rey on Raw and having him try to avoid his son from November to April would have been a nightmare booking situation. As a result, Rey was moved, the two may run into each other and tease their match at the Royal Rumble and the company can hold off on the bout until they can feature it on the biggest stage WWE has to offer.

This Makes Total Booking Sense

What WWE didn't want to do was run the well dry of confrontations with Rey and Judgment Day, which included Dominik. Getting Rey involved in other storylines only to think he's avoided a problem allows WWE to revisit this feud down the road. Starting in February, the company can really focus on the storyline between father and son and get the most out of their first match against one another.
