Since WrestleMania’s inception in March 1985 with WrestleMania 1 at Madison Square Garden, there have been countless spectacular matches taking place at any time on the card in the decades since on ‘The Grandest Stage of Them All’. It is the biggest stage where countless wrestlers have stepped up to become legends.

Dave Meltzer of the ‘Wrestling Observer Newsletter’ and his star-rating system have been the benchmark for professional wrestling match ratings since 1983, but regardless there are WrestleMania bouts that he has both underrated and overrated on numerous occasions. Which WrestleMania match ups rank as the most overhyped, or underappreciated, by Dave Meltzer and his star-rating system?

10 Overrated: Diesel Vs. Shawn Michaels, WWE World Heavyweight Championship, WWE WrestleMania 11, 4*

Diesel Vs Shawn Michaels

A good WWE World Heavyweight Championship bout, but nothing more, at 1995s WrestleMania 11. Despite Michaels working on top for most of the match, it suffered from a slow pace and uneventful action outside a couple of nice sequences.

Quite a disappointing world title match at WrestleMania with Diesel triumphing after a sloppy-looking Jackknife Powerbomb to retain. Certainly, an overrated match that never reached the level worthy of a 4* rating.

9 Underrated: Seth Rollins Vs. Finn Balor Vs. The Miz, WWE Intercontinental Championship, Triple Threat, WWE WrestleMania 34, 3.5*

Seth Rollins Vs Finn Balor Vs The Miz

This was a stellar triple threat match for the Intercontinental Championship at 2018's WrestleMania 34, with The Miz defending against both Seth Rollins and Finn Balor to open the show.

A hot crowd, blistering action, and excellent drama led to a tremendous opening bout with Seth Rollins emerging victorious to become Intercontinental Champion. An underrated match up as these three stars displayed their show stealing ability once again.

8 Overrated: Shawn Michaels Vs. Bret Hart, 60-Minute Iron Man Match, WWE World Heavyweight Championship, WWE WrestleMania 12, 4.25*

Shawn Michaels Vs Bret Hart

This was a very good WrestleMania main event at 1996s WrestleMania 12 as Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart battled for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in a 60-minute Iron Man match. Although, this is not the classic match it is heralded as by some viewers and critics.

It suffered from a slow pace throughout and even when it did escalate in excitement, it was never as spectacular as other matches these two had on ‘The Grandest Stage of Them All’. Regardless, there were enthralling spots and great action, but it is difficult to call the match overall anything fantastic.

7 Underrated: CM Punk Vs. Chris Jericho, WWE Championship, WWE WrestleMania 27, 3.75*

CM Punk Vs Chris Jericho WrestleMania 28

This was a fantastic match at 2012's WrestleMania 27, as Chris Jericho challenged CM Punk for the WWE Championship in the co-main event. While slightly overshadowed by The Undertaker vs Triple H and The Rock against John Cena, this was still a splendid clash that displayed the tremendous chemistry of these two during their 2012 rivalry.

Certainly, an underrated WrestleMania world championship bout with brilliant counters, sequences, and psychology as CM Punk retained thanks to the Anaconda Vice.

6 Overrated: Brock Lesnar Vs. Kurt Angle, WWE Championship, WWE WrestleMania 19, 4.25*

Brock Lesnar vs Kurt Angle

This was a very good main event at 2003's WrestleMania 19 with Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle battling for the WWE Championship in a highly physical bout. However, Lesnar was still somewhat green here and while the two wrestled a great technical match, it did not evoke the desired crowd reaction or intensity.

The most memorable moment was a botch in Lesnar’s Shooting Star Press, with these two going on to have far better matches later on in 2003 particularly their Iron Man match on SmackDown. An overrated WrestleMania main event, undoubtedly.

5 Underrated: Edge Vs. Mick Foley, Hardcore Match, WWE WrestleMania 22, 4*

Edge Vs Mick Foley WrestleMania 22

A spectacular Hardcore match between Edge and Mick Foley at 2006's WrestleMania 22, with both men brutalizing one another in a fantastic display of violence. The multiple weapons were used to tremendous effect with vicious spots throughout as Foley proved he could still go, and Edge established himself as a main event star.

This will always be remembered, of course, for the Spear through the flaming table as Edge triumphed in epic fashion. A fantastic Hardcore match that exceeded expectations and ranks higher than 4* in many viewers’ eyes.

4 Overrated: Ronda Rousey & Kurt Angle Vs. Triple H & Stephanie McMahon, WWE WrestleMania 34, 4.25*

Triple H & Stephanie McMahon Vs Kurt Angle & Ronda Rousey

This was a very good mixed tag team match in a star-affirming performance for Ronda Rousey in WWE, and a fun win for the babyfaces. However, it was not a fantastic tag team bout as 4.25* would indicate. While it is understandable that viewers and critics rate this bout highly due to the incredible crowd reaction, the action itself was strong but not a show stealing performance.

It was great seeing Rousey hoist up Triple H, and give Stephanie her comeuppance, but it was not even the best match on the show as Charlotte and Asuka tore the house down. A very good tag team bout but nothing more at WrestleMania 34.

3 Underrated: Bianca Belair Vs. Sasha Banks, WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship, WWE WrestleMania 37 – Night 1, 4*

Sasha Banks vs Bianca Belair WWE WrestleMania 37

A sensational Night One WrestleMania 37 main event last year, as Sasha Banks defended her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Bianca Belair in a historic bout.

The two women did not disappoint, despite an underwhelming build, wrestling a splendid match up with excellent pacing, great spots, and clever psychology surrounding Belair’s hair. This remains one of the best women’s matches in WWE’s history and at 4*, is surely underrated by Dave Meltzer.

2 Overrated: The Undertaker Vs. Triple H, No Holds Barred, WWE WrestleMania 27, 4.5*

The Undertaker Vs Triple H

This was still a very good, if not great, clash between The Undertaker and Triple H at 2011's WrestleMania 27. But it is arguably undeserving of a 4.5* rating which implies it was an amazing bout. Still, great, exciting action throughout as the two legendary stars threw bombs at one another, with a few exhilarating spots and near falls.

However, it was not without its flaws, as the two relied heavily on finisher kickouts to a less successful degree than The Undertaker’s classic matches against Shawn Michaels in the previous two years. The pacing was slow and dull at times as well in between big maneuvers. The Undertaker would prevail to keep the Streak intact in a great match, but nothing outstanding.

1 Underrated: Shawn Michaels Vs. The Undertaker, WWE WrestleMania 25, 4.75*

Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker (WrestleMania 25, 4/5/2009)

There isn’t much more to be said about this match than already has, but simply put, it is one of the greatest WWE matches in history. An all-time classic that captured magic between two legendary stars in their first WrestleMania meeting in 2009, this was a special match in every aspect.

A big fight feel, tremendous in-ring action, a red-hot crowd, and incredible drama led to an other-worldly match on ‘The Grandest Stage Of Them All’. A match fans will remember for decades to come, most agree it was incomprehensible how Dave Meltzer could rate this below the perfect 5* rating, at the time.
