There is something so special about a return. Some of the best ovations in the past have dealt with a certain star returning after a lengthy hiatus. Shane McMahon is a recent example of this. After years and years of being away from the company, the Detroit, Michigan crowd gave him a chilling ovation that he’ll never forget and neither will we. WWE fans can expect similar circumstances with Rey Mysterio. The former WWE Champion recently signed a multi-year deal. We can only imagine the reception. In this article we’ll speculate other WWE legends and the possibility of a return. Of course, one legend in particular is stealing all the headlines for possibly lacing up the boots for the first time in almost a decade. We’ll also discuss others that might be interested in a return. We’ll use their words to justify the return possibility.
One the flip side we’ll take a look at wrestlers that are completely done. Again, we’re not talking about those like Alex Riley or Cameron – we’re talking strictly legends such as Sable, Steve Austin and CM Punk to name a few. Again, never say never but for the time being it seems pretty evident that these eight are done for good.
Enjoy the article folks and like always be sure to share it with a friend. Without further ado here are 12 WWE legends that might come out retirement for one more match and 8 that are done. Let’s get started.
20 One More Match - Booker T
During his podcast Heated Conversations Booker addressed a question asking if he missed the ring. His response was an interesting one to say this least:
"I never said that I was retired, I never said that I was never gonna put the boots on ever again. People ask me if I miss it, I go 'no, I don't.' People ask me, 'man, are gonna see one more match?' And I've always said, hey, never say never, because you never know what you're gonna do. Right now, I feel good, my body is as peak performance as it's gonna get at this stage right now.” (Source Wrestling Inc)
We might be stirring the pot a little but it kind of sounds like Booker’s putting himself over... It isn’t every day that a retired wrestler claims their body is at the peak. In truth, usually it’s the opposite. If the opportunity presents itself, Booker’s coming back for one more match. Can you dig it?
19 One More Match - Alundra Blayze
It’s been more than two decades since Alundra Blayze last competed in a WWE ring. Despite her age of 54 Madusa shocked fans via Twitter making the claim that she’s open to not only one more match but several bouts against the current crop of talent. This was her response to a fan asking is she’s going to wrestle at Women’s Evolution:
“Would love to all they need to do is ask..”
She took this a step further in the following tweet, listing the wrestlers she would want to face. According to the former Women’s Champion, a Triple Threat against Natalya and Charlotte would be first followed by matches against Shayna Baszler, Kairi Sane and Nia Jax. Clearly, she’s had time to think about the scenario!
18 Done – Sable
Believe it or not its 14 year since Sable was last under contract with the WWE. Despite her relationship with Brock Lesnar she’s kept away from the business living a private life out in Saskatchewan, Canada. It seems rather obvious at this point that Sable has no desire to return choosing to live a quiet life with her two kids and husband, Brock Lesnar.
There were lots of times WWE could have reintroduced Sable. Raw 25, the women’s Royal Rumble and so many more special events could have eased Sable back into the company even for one appearance. It hasn’t gone down and it likely won’t. If she does return it’ll be for some type of appearance - an actual match is out of the question.
17 One More Match - Goldberg
“I’ll quote one of the most famous movies that I was ever in, ‘Santa’s Slay’: It ain’t over ‘til I say it’s over.” (Source: Washington Post)
So Goldberg definitely isn’t turning down the notion of having one more match or perhaps several matches. Goldberg has gone on the record discussing possible opponents. He still wants to get in there with The Undertaker. However that ship might have sailed. Goldberg has also mentions locking up with Roman Reigns. Knowing Vince’s thirst to push Roman, this possible match isn’t out of the realm of possibility. Goldberg clearly wants another match; it’ll be interesting to see if WWE gives it to him at some point.
16 One More Match – Kevin Nash
"I have one more run. I'm started to get things fixed. I'm getting my shoulder fixed, I'm getting my neck fixed. I miss it, so never say never." (Source: Wrestlinginc)
These were Nash’s words following his Hall Of Fame induction back in 2015. You would think those same words don’t hold the same value three years later. However on the contrary, the 59 year old is still making waves in the wrestling ring. In August Nash won the Big Time Wrestling World Title. Yes, clearly the fire still burns. With an nWo return possibly looming Nash might be the one to step up and face one of the younger WWE stars. Hopefully that quad is in check!
15 Done - Scott Hall
Hall has also teased one more match. Heck just a couple of months ago he was responding to match requests via Twitter cutting promos on younger indie talents claiming he would retire them!
Looking at Hall’s shape today it’s a miracle to see how darn good he looks. However knowing his past, to quote a wise man, there isn’t a chance in hell Vince would put Hall back in the ring. We’ll definitely see him in nostalgia like segments or perhaps a managerial role of sorts - definitely nothing match related at least in a WWE ring.
14 One More Match - AJ Lee
She called it a career while still in her 20s. For that reason it only makes sense that AJ Lee misses the ring. She admitted in the past that she does get the itch to return from time to time. With the women’s revolution in full effect that itch might only increase.
Various female stars are emerging. This might entice Lee to return that much more. A certain all women’s PPV is also set to take place. According to the rumors, McMahon himself reached out to Lee for her involvement on the show. Given she’s still only 31, it won’t be too surprising if she finally decides to return either in the next couple of weeks or somewhere down the road.
13 One More Match - Jeff Jarrett
It was a deserving moment for Jeff Jarrett to join the WWE Hall Of Fame despite his rocky past with the company. Months after the gig Jeff was asked about making a return to the WWE permanently. He didn’t deny the scenario and instead he just claimed that if it was going to go down it wouldn’t be the public’s knowledge.
Obviously working alongside Elias would be scenario every wrestling fan would want to see. Given WWE’s willingness to push Elias an angle between the two isn’t out of the question. In fact, Jarrett also discussed how that might turn out;
“Maybe one day he'll take a guitar shot, he'll be added to the list.” (Source: Sportskeeda)
12 Done - Mick Foley
Is just us here on The Sportster or was Mick looking real good during his Raw return? Foley was moving better than we’ve seen in years. Of course, this sparked the debate of a possible return. Foley mentions that although his mobility has improved a lot over the past months a return remains impossible due to various injury issues from the past;
“I’m doing a lot better, mobility-wise, but I can never have a match again. My forearm is still sore, no exaggeration, from when I hit Sheamus two-and-a-half years ago at WrestleMania. So, I think you’ve seen the last of me in any type of match atmosphere.” (Source: Body Slam)
At the very least, DDP Yoga is doing the veteran some good!
11 One More Match - Christian
“I haven't been cleared and I don't know if I ever would be and to be honest with you, I'm 44 years old and I never want to be a guy that hung on for too long. Do I think I can go back at a high level? Yeah, i'm confident in myself that I could. The thing is, could I and do I want to are two completely different things." (Source: Wrestlinginc)
To quote Dumb and Dumber’s Lloyd Christmas, “so you’re saying there’s a chance!?” Heck this is the same guy that has a “one more match” t-shirt selling for $6 on WWE Shop! Now this return might be a little less likely however given the fact that Christian remains in phenomenal shape these days who knows. If he gets medical clearance maybe he might feel the itch to return for one more match against a young WWE star.
10 Done - Edge
“I will once again and for the last time say this: I greatly appreciate that people would like to see me have one more match, or come back, or Daniel Bryan got cleared so why can’t you. I will never be cleared. WWE will never medically clear me to compete again. And I appreciate it but that’s all there is to that.” (Source: Sportskeeda)
Edge made it clear a couple of months back that his in-ring career is done with. With Bryan returning fans assumed Edge might get a similar fate. However, Edge is dealing with a lot more than concussion issues. It’s cervical spinal stenosis that ended his career for good. Thanks for the memories Edge. He won’t return, clearly.
9 One More Match - Mark Henry
Death, taxes and a Mark Henry return after calling a career, these are the life guarantees. We’ve seen it time and time again, Henry call it quits only to return. Heck we saw the big fellow put on the tights for the Greatest Royal Rumble, that following his Hall Of Fame induction.
He told TMZ that despite the HOF honors he’s still not ruling out the possibility of a return to the ring:
"I can't rule out a year or two, but right now it's a no, I'm not trying to get in there. If it was a perfect circumstance and something happened down the road, yeah.”
8 Done - Bret Hart
Aged 61 and wrestling since the 70s, this WWE legend is clearly done. Despite his age, fans still wonder about Bret and his future. However, to no surprise, Hart has no desire to return whatsoever.
Hart has discussed helping out the WWE creatively behind the scenes, though neither McMahon or anyone from the WWE got back to The Hitman about the possible position. At the very least, we hope Hunter gives Bret a call someday and invites the legend to the Performer Center - if anything, as a guest trainer to motivate the NXT hopefuls.
7 One More Match - Sting
"I don't have any side effects? I can still work out and it doesn't bother me, I don't get a sore neck from sleeping or anything so why would I get surgery? If you don't need it, don't do it." (Source: The Sun)
This is Sting’s optimistic approach on the neck injury that ended his WWE run back in 2015 against Seth Rollins. Despite the injury Sting continues to express interest in a return, particularly in a match against The Undertaker. Even during his HOF induction Sting made no guarantee that he was done for good. Let’s hope if the Stinger gets one more match it goes down sooner rather than later.
6 Done - Ric Flair
It sounds absolutely ridiculous given his near death experience however if it was up to Flair and he was booking Monday Night Raw, the Nature Boy might slot himself in a match. Yeah, he’s that crazy.
The reality is although he has recovered remarkably well, we won’t see the Nature Boy take a single bump ever again. His recent health scare proved that his reckless ways caught up. He must focus on the recovery aspect and put any chance of an in-ring return in the rear-view mirror for good. The Flair name is in good hands in the ring thanks to Ric’s daughter Charlotte.
5 One More Match - Jerry Lawler
If you thought Flair re-entering the ring was laughable what about Jerry Lawler? Back when he suffered a heart attack during an episode of Raw thinking about Jerry back in the ring seemed like a joke with poor taste. However five years after the incident the 68 year old is still taking bumps on the indie scene. Most recently Lawler competed in a match paying homage to his late son Brian Christopher.
Perhaps there might come a time when WWE puts Lawler back in the ring for one more match. It won’t be a lengthy contest but instead one for nostalgia purposes and maybe to put a younger wrestler over. When King finally hangs them up for good he’ll be remembered as one of the most underrated wrestling talents that ever lived (especially with the new generation).
4 Done - CM Punk
Prior to his last UFC fight CM Punk once again turned down any possibility of a WWE return. In fact, he turned down returning to the wrestling business altogether.
Following another embarrassing UFC defeat fans once again linked Punk to pro wrestling despite his claims that he lost total interest in the industry. Punk once again proved that he had different plans taking on a role in his first ever feature film.
The reality of the situation, Punk got sued by the WWE, he’s turning 40 in October and has no interest in returning while WWE takes jabs at him when they see fit. Clearly a return seems unlikely at this point. Sorry to all the fantasy bookers out there...
3 One More Match - Hulk Hogan
"The Hulkster, he really is a good guy and we didn't talk about it, because it's not done yet but it's all but done, he's coming back to the WWE and from what I understand, and again, we didn't talk about it, he's going to wrestle again at an event.” (Source: Sportskeeda)
These ar ethe comments made by Howard Eskin following a conversation with the Hulkster. Clearly Howard got the first half correct but what about the wrestle again part? Hogan definitely wants in. He’s open to returning and among some of his desired opponents are John Cena and Braun Strowman. In fact, Hulk said his final match would be against Strowman during a fan Q&A via YouTube.
2 Done - Stone Cold
There is something so special about hearing that glass shatter and watching Steve Austin dart to the ring in a fury. During Raw 25. we got some of that nostalgia back for one more night. Unfortunately, it’ll never take place for an actual match. Austin has confirmed time and time again that he’s completely done with that aspect of the business:
“I don’t want the pressure of having another match on my shoulders, because I don’t have to have another match because I’m satisfied with the career that I had. I appreciate everyone that had supported my career but, man, I’m done. I’m working on stuff that I want to do and I really don’t want to go back to the business. I’m done, I don’t need a comeback. End of story.” (Source: The Sun)
1 One More Match - Shawn Michaels
Ever since he called it a career fans haven’t stopped asking for one more match. In fact, neither has Vince. McMahon most recently offered HBK a chance to return at both the Greatest Royal Rumble and prior, a WrestleMania 33 match against AJ Styles.
Both didn’t come to fruition however that appears to be changing. Michaels hinted at a return following a promo with The Undertaker. Now the buzz has HBK linked to a return alongside Triple H at the Crown Jewel PPV to take on Taker and Kane. This might also lead to one last showdown between Michaels and The Deadman at either Survivor Series or WrestleMania. Dreams do come true, folks.
