15 Affairs From The 2000s That WWE Wants You To Forget

From legends tainting their lore by hooking up with famous names to house wrecking Divas.

WWE stars are on the road for the majority of the year, it's no surprise that many of them date within the business. It's hard to maintain a relationship when you're touring the world, and being famous, temptations will always occur as they do with most athletes and celebrities.

Considering they work so closely together (both physically and in the office), the idea of WWE superstars hooking up here and there is a logical one. Yet, every now and then, these hookups turn to scandalous affairs, big enough to taint the company’s reputation.

Although the company thrives on scandal, some of these events are too controversial to even mention around their top officials. Some of the performers shared information about these scandals, but many of them remained clouded in mystery.

That being said, here are 15 affairs from the 2000s the WWE would rather forget. From legends tainting their lore by hooking up with famous names to house wrecking Divas, these entries will spark your curiosity in some of your favorite WWE stars.

15 Dolph Ziggler And Nikki Bella

via opptrends.com

Ziggler and Bella’s romance goes back as far as 2008 before she found love with John Cena. What makes this part of Bella’s past complicated is the fact that it keeps coming up when she and Cena are in conversation. Awkwardly so, Ziggler even admitted feelings for Bella while she was with Cena. In an interview with Reveal Magazine, Bella revealed how Cena reacted.

“Poor John was like, ‘Is there anything I should be worried about?’, I was like ‘Umm I don’t think so…’ But no, I adore John and I couldn’t imagine my life without him.”

Although Bella confirmed her love for Cena, it still must be hard to work with a guy you know is out for your woman. Considering Cena is one of the faces of the WWE today, it’s certainly not the company’s favorite indoor romance.

14 Brock Lesnar And Sable

via bloodyelbow.com

The duo of Lesnar and Sable are still together today, so it’s not like the relationship is a tainted one. The problem with the pairing is Sable’s history that involves former WWE wrestlers and upper brass.

Sable was married twice before joining hands with Lesnar, and one of her husbands was Marc Mero, who was aliased “Johnny B. Badd” in WCW. Not only this, but there are also rumors of her having an affair with Vince McMahon. The two even kissed in one storyline.

The fact that Sable got around so much does not help her rep as a WWE Diva. Neither does the fact that she sued the company in 1999. Nonetheless, her pairing with Lesnar is to be forgotten; Otherwise, a background check would be in session.

13 David Flair And Stacy Keibler

via wrestlingforum.com

Flair was never as entertaining or skilled as his father Ric Flair was during his time in the WWE and WCW. However, he was successful at pulling one of WWE’s most popular Divas.

What made this paring a forgettable one was the fact that it was used for a storyline that involved a staged wedding between Keibler and Flair. The storyline was built up just so Keibler could call off the wedding due to being pregnant with another man’s child. The storyline was long, and it seldom peaked fans interests. Instead, it annoyed them.

Considering Flair’s father’s status as a WWE Legend, it’s quite embarrassing to see the offspring underperform in such a manner, and yet also be involved in a controversial relationship in real life.

12 CM Punk And AJ Lee

via hiddenremote.com

The fact that Lee retired when Punk was fired by the WWE created a controversial conversation, and many deem the incident not a coincidence. After all, the company was suing her husband at the time, and they fired him on their wedding day. Punk himself even admitted believing the company chose to fire him precisely on that special day.

The situation was awkward for Lee and she had to endure “CM-Punk” chants whenever she entered the ring. Lee’s retirement was likely fueled by the WWE’s firing of Punk. That said, due to the pairing, the company lost two of their locker room stars.

The bad blood between the pair and the WWE makes this one relationship the company would rather forget.

11 Chyna, X-Pac And Triple H

via eyesonthering.com

This triangle started in the 90s and made its way into the 2000s. Chyna started dating X-Pac after the latter endured a breakup that made him emotionally vulnerable. Looking out for his friend, Triple H warned X-Pac about dating her, noting her personal experiences as her red flags. Nonetheless, X-Pac continued dating her and the ultimate result was a sex tape that the company showed much embarrassment about.

The two weren’t too embarrassed about the tape though, and apparently, they did it for money.

"I'm pretty sure [the motivation behind making the sex tape was financial]. It's hard to put yourself in someone else's head. I'm not sure. As far as my own motivation, sure, it was financial. Also, 'hey, she wants to do it, then, okay. I'm fine with it. Okay.'" X-Pac said in an interview with Wrestling Inc. "It's six figures and I got $50k up front. She got $100. But what happened was, I came back after rehab and we actually filmed after the deal was made, they wanted more footage and we filmed it after. And then, I flew to China and filmed some footage over there, so they could add it to the video."

The two clearly got their money’s worth from the scandal, but the WWE had to pay for it in the long run.

10 Triple H, Chyna And Stephanie McMahon

via twitter.com

As noted in the previous entry, Triple H dated Chyna during her time in the WWE. However, the relationship became sour after it was revealed that Triple H was having an affair with Vince McMahon’s daughter, Stephanie. In an interview with Wrestling Inc, Chyna referred to the situation.

“Well, I had my doubts. Like people always say, "Is it real? It's television. Is the storyline real?" I was like, "Is there something going on? If there is, I can take it." This was my love, this was my career. I need to know because I didn't want to lose my career. He just kept saying, "It wasn't, wasn't wasn't," but his attitude had changed. I actually did the snoop. I found a love letter from Stephanie McMahon that had been dated from the previous year so I knew that there was a year affair going on.”

Chyna passed away in 2016, and Triple H is married to Stephanie. Considering the two manage the WWE now, it’s likely they prefer to avoid any conversation regarding their old love triangle.

9 Lita, Matt Hardy And Edge

via tumblr.com

This one’s another about fidelity and cheating. When you have two of your roster’s stars dating each other, things can get complicated. It doesn’t help the situation if one of them is cheating, setting the wrong example for fans of the superstar all over.

In 2005, Hardy, Edge, and Lita were involved in a controversial storyline based on real life events. In the storyline, Lita cheated on Hardy with Edge, and many believe that she did so in real life as well.

“It became such a hot story and they said 'they want to turn this into a story, but you guys have been professional, he [Matt] hasn't, there is money involved in this storyline, but it's your call,’” said Lita about the scandal. “You know we felt terrible he lost his job over it so we're like 'Yeah, we made our bed we'll lie in it.'”

Although the WWE capitalized on the scandal, it doesn’t change the fact that many fans of Lita and Edge were subject to such bad example.

8 Batista And Melina

via wrestlingforum.com

This one’s a bad look for the WWE because even its chairman Vince McMahon was involved. Apparently, he did not respect Morrison as a man and even allowed Batista to engage in a sexual affair with his girlfriend Melina. McMahon was not a fan of Morrison’s non-confrontational style and felt he couldn’t actually win a fight in real life.

In an interview with Jim Ross, Melina said that she and Batista received many crude remarks on the scandal and that he was only defending her from bullies accusing her of cheating. She also noted that her relationship ultimately came to an end because of the rumors.

Till this day, Melina denies cheating on Morrison with Batista, claiming them to be products of jealousy and drama.

7 John Cena And Mickie James

via youtube.com

According to James’ previous boyfriend Kenny Dykstra, she was cheating on him with John Cena. What makes this relationship a forgettable one, however, was how James reacted to Cena breaking up with her. The company literally had to move her from Raw to SmackDown just so she could cope with the situation.

Reflecting on the situation, James started dishing out tainting information about Cena and the other girls he dated after her.

"He was messing with MJ so I got moved to SmackDown so they could further mess. I jobbed, got fired. When MJ got crazy because he wouldn't date her, she then got fired. Weird biz huh? She got the title, [got] on a TV show while with him. Serves her well though."

Contrary to James’ beliefs, her ex-boyfriend claims her and Cena never officially dated, and that the two were only hooking up. Drama, drama.

6 Chris Benoit, Michelle McCool And Victoria

This one is an urban legend that has been rumored for years. The controversy behind this affair is so outrageous, that it even suggests Benoit might have murdered his family because of it.

According to documents released by the Fayette County Sheriff’s office, Nancy Benoit believed her husband was cheating on her with a Diva from the WWE roster. A friend of hers told officials that she planned on leaving him when Benoit murdered her and their 7-year-old son.

"She told me to promise her that if anything ever happened to her, make sure that Chris was investigated," Pamela Hildebrand Clark told officials. "She said she had a bad feeling that something was going to happen, and she just couldn't shake it."

McCool never commented on the matter publicly, and it’s likely she won’t, considering how sensitive it is.

5 Chris Jericho And Kelly Kelly

via tumblr.com

Is it possible that the married man Jericho cheated with Kelly Kelly? In 2009, pictures surfaced that suggest so. The photos showed the pair lounging in nightclubs, and one photo even showed them kissing.

It’s maintained that the rumor is simply that—a rumor (despite the photo of Jericho and Kelly kissing). Some say the photos were taken out of context and were innocent. Yet, it doesn’t help Jericho’s case that Kelly had allegedly slept with many in the WWE locker room, from guys like Test to John Cena.

Jericho has been married since 2000 to his wife, Jessica Jericho, so the incident is a terrible look for them. Since Jericho is one of the company’s most influential stars, this is a controversy they would rather forget.

4 Kurt Angle And Dawn Marie

wwe.com/wwe.com

Angle and Marie did not appear in on-screen storylines during their 2002-2005 SmackDown run. Still, behind the scenes, the two were actually having an affair. Marie admitted to the affair in a 2008 shoot interview.

The two dated between 2003 and 2004. This means Marie had been cheating on her boyfriend at the time, Simon Diamond, who worked with TNA. Her reputation suffered, and she was quickly labeled a homewrecker. Angle also suffered morally since he was still married to Karen Angle at the time of the affair. It was an embarrassing situation considering Karen also spent time with the WWE crew.

Since leaving the WWE, Angle is no longer with Karen and the controversy still haunts him.

3 Vince McMahon And Sable

via heartbreakers.me

With the WWE, it’s difficult to separate reality from the storylines. After all, many of the company’s best stories were fueled by real life events. That said, it’s hard not to imagine its chairman in countless of backstage affairs. One storyline suggests he had an affair with Sable.

After Sable sued the company and McMahon settled, she returned to the WWE setup with a new role as his mistress. The storyline put her at odds with his daughter Stephanie and wife Lina, and eventually, the idea of McMahon hooking up with Sable died out.

Many believe it was a well-calculated strategy by McMahon created to counter the possibility of a scandal with a WWE storyline. Well played Vince, well played.

2 Alberto Del Rio And Paige

via metronews.ca

This entry is one of the wackier ones on this list. What started out as an affair has turned into a relationship with the pair getting married. It's said that Del Rio was cheating on his ex wife with Paige prior to divorcing her. His ex wife confirmed those rumors, although Del Rio denies them to this day, stating he only started seeing Paige after they had ended things.

Whether or not this is true, it’s certainly something too scandalous for the company to refer to especially considering the recent controversy surrounding them. Paige probably doesn't have a bright future in the company while Del Rio won't be welcomed back anytime soon after his recent rants.

1 Triple H And Christy Hemme

wwe.com/wwe.com

It’s interesting to consider how Stephanie McMahon reacted when word got around that Hemme was behaving inappropriately around her husband Triple H, and it could not have been a coincidence that Hemme was fired directly after the rumor’s emergence.

According to a report by Wade Keller to Pro Wrestling Torch Newsletter, it’s possible that was the case.

“The word on Christy Hemme’s sudden release is that on a recent tour she acted inappropriately toward Triple H, and word got back to Stephanie McMahon,” said Keller. “There are a variety of stories going around, none of which directly implicate Hunter for doing anything physical. Apparently, though, Stephanie wasn’t pleased that Christy seemed excited about traveling with Hunter and Dave Batista on the trip.”

A few years later, Hemme released a cryptic message about the matter. You deduce its meaning.

“There’s stuff that I just don’t need to go into, but I have said it before. I’m a strong woman that lives by my morals, and if you ask me to do something that’s not within my morals I will say no,” said Hemme about her release. “So once I put that, you know line down, that’s when I got the ax.”
