It’s not easy being a WWE superstar and maintaining a love life at the same time. While becoming a professional wrestler brings with it success, fame and the fulfillment of being able to live your dream, it doesn’t leave time for much else. Wrestlers are on the road five days a week, performing in a different city almost every night and dealing with a constant barrage of admirers, creating a perfect storm of problems for those with a wife and kids at home.
Because of this, it shouldn’t be a surprise that many wrestlers have been involved in an affair or two during their time on the road. In fact, in a 2002 interview with Howard Stern, WWE CEO Vince McMahon himself admitted to sleeping with “anything in a skirt,” during the early days of his career. He of course added that he’s been faithful for many years now.
However, he’s not the only one guilty of tagging out of his marriage for a dalliance or two. There have been several notable affairs in wrestling over the years, some even involving other wrestlers. The following list examines confessions of some of the most notorious wrestling affairs that rocked the locker room from the golden age of wrestling to today’s “PG” era. Some were confessed by the wrestlers themselves while in other cases, it was a scorned spouse or third party who brought the indiscretion to light. From Vince McMahon to John Cena to the Hulkster-himself, here are 15 confessions about wrestlers who’ve had affairs.
15 Victoria Said She And John Cena Had A Fling
There are few wrestlers who’s love lives are more speculated about than John Cena. The face that runs the place has been linked to just about every woman the WWE has hired throughout his 15-year career. However, one rumor that turned out to have a bit of truth to it, is that Cena engaged in an affair with Victoria, sort of. The rumor was so prevalent that Victoria decided to address it during an interview with the Wrestling Observer in 2012. “I have been with my husband for 20 years. He’s the best guy in the world. But like any 20 year relationship, we’ve had some good times and we’ve had some bad times.” She said during the interview. “We have separated a few times. One of those times we were separated, I dated John for about a month. It was not in 2006 or 2007. It was in 2002, when we were both in Louisville.”
14 Sunny Claims She Slept With Davey Boy Smith
When it comes to her past relationships, Tammy Sytch is an open book, just ask her. However, during a 2012 interview with YouShoot, Sunny’s portrayer caused some controversy when she revealed she had engaged in an affair with Davey Boy Smith aka The British Bulldog. Calling Smith one of her best friends in the business, she revealed that they had an on-and-off fling despite the fact Smith had been married to Diana Hart for well over a decade at the time.
Interestingly enough, she also revealed that Shawn Michaels was well aware of the relationship and that it was the source of Smith’s backstage heat with the Heartbreak Kid. Soon after the interview was posted, Smith’s daughter, Georgia took to Twitter to address the revelation, writing, “I don’t want to give this topic attention but that is complete lies. With what my brother, my mother and my family have been through, she should have more respect.”
13 Kurt Angle Gave In To His Stalker
This confession is a doozy. Kurt Angle is not just an Olympic gold medalist and WWE Hall of Famer but one of the most respected athletes to ever step foot in a WWE ring. So of course, fans were shocked to learn that Angle had strayed from his marriage with a woman who would end up stalking him. In 2008, a pilot appeared online for a potential reality show about Angle’s life, titled The Real Angle. While the show wouldn’t end up moving forward, it did contain Angle’s admission that in 2003, he engaged in an affair with a woman by the name of Deann Siden. Siden was arrested a year later for stalking Angle and his family, reportedly bombarding them with phone calls claiming to be pregnant with Angle’s baby and even threatening his wife, Karen’s life. Angle and his wife tried to work past the indiscretion, eventually divorcing in 2008.
12 Seth Rollins's Fiancee Does The Confession For Him
This one isn’t so much a confession as it is being caught red-handed. However, after the evidence leaked online, it was hard to deny. In 2015, Rollins received quite the shock when his then-fiancee Leighla Schultz published private photographs of him and NXT wrestler Zahra Schreiber on both his and her social media accounts. Rollins had reportedly been engaging in an on-the-road affair with Schrieber and when Schultz discovered the photos in question as well as text messages on Rollins’ phone, she decided to get some ethically questionable revenge.
Schultz would post a nude photograph of Schreiber on Rollins’ Instagram page complete with heart eyes emoji caption, later tweeting a photo of Rollins as well (assumably sent to Schreiber in exchange) to her own account. Following their split, Rollins began publicly dating Schreiber, even shown with her at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn, however, their relationship wasn’t meant to be and in early 2016, it was announced that they had broken up.
11 Alberto Del Rio Began His Relationship With Paige While Still Being Married
Alberto Del Rio’s relationship with Paige has been a source of Internet fascination pretty much from the moment it began. However, if Del Rio’s former wife, Angela Velkei is to be believed, those beginnings were even more eventful than most probably realized. In 2016, Velkei filed for divorce from her husband of four years, citing adultery as one of the reasons for ending the marriage. The papers also state May 27, 2016 as the day their marriage ended. It didn’t take long for Internet commenters to notice that the date is roughly two weeks after Del Rio and Paige officially went public with their relationship.
However, it’s certainly possible that Velkei was simply referring to a dalliance earlier in their marriage. Del Rio, for his part, says that the marriage had actually been over for more than a year, claiming they separated in 2015 due to the “cruel treatment,” he endured during the relationship.
10 The Rock's Dad Had An Ongoing Affair For 20 Years
The Rock has opened up in recent years about his childhood and how tough it was at times. However, some news came to light a few years ago that The Rock's father, Rocky Johnson, had an ongoing affair with a woman by the name of Luan Crable. That affair lasted 25 years, while Johnson was married to The Rock's mother Ata.
“Dewey [Dwayne] had a really hard time as a child growing up because he never saw his dad,” recalled Luan Crable, who spoke to Star magazine. "“Rocky was on the road 12 out of every 14 days, and that was crushing for Dewey. It was very hard to watch, because he was so sad all the time.”
She also went on to mention Ata and The Rock found about when Dwayne was about 12 years old and he angrily called her to stay away from his father.
9 Bret Hart Opens Up About His 'Adventures' On The Road
Bret Hart is one of the most celebrated wrestlers in the history of the sport. His technical prowess and charisma made him an icon, known for his serious, family-friendly persona. However, in his no holds barred autobiography, Hitman: My Real Life In The Cartoon World Of Wrestling, Hart details that his extensive travel schedule and tumultuous marriage often made him a less-than-ideal husband.
In one instance, he describes cheating on his wife while touring around Japan, writing, “When we fell out of the elevator, on our way to our rooms, two cute Japanese girls approached us and asked for autographs.” He revealed that after signing them, he invited the girls back to his room, something he would do countless times after that. In fact, The Hitman describes cheating on his wife so much, picking up women almost became a a way to pass time while on the road. “The lust was stronger than the guilt.”
8 Kevin Sullivan Writes His Own Divorce
We all know that Nancy Benoit and Chris Benoit’s marriage ended in tragedy. It’s a difficult subject that’s often addressed with hushed whispers amongst wrestling fans. However, in a candid 2016 interview with Talk Is Jericho, Nancy’s sister, Sandra Toffoloni illuminated some details of just how the couple had gotten together. Prior to dating Chris, Nancy had been involved in a more than decade-long marriage to wrestler Kevin Sullivan. However, during a tour of Japan, Nancy’s feelings changed, falling in love with the intense Canadian grappler.
Toffoloni says she sensed something was up during Sullivan’s 1997 retirement match at Bash At The Beach against Chris, their strikes looking far stiffer than ones you’d see in a normal match. Upon going backstage after the match, she knew something was wrong. “Ric Flair had come out and waved for myself and Kevin’s daughter to get up and we walked back there and they were fighting in the hallway.” Interestingly enough, the wrestlers were apart of a storyline at the time where Nancy had turned on Sullivan in favor of teaming up with Chris. As Toffoloni puts it, “Kevin Sullivan wrote and produced his own divorce.”
7 Triple H and Stephanie McMahon Dated Behind Chyna's Back
No list of affairs in the wrestling world would be complete without mentioning Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. It’s an affair that rocked the wrestling community, changed the future of the WWE and sadly altered the career trajectory of one of its biggest stars. While everything that needs to be said about this affair has been said about 100 times over, here’s the cliff’s notes version. Before McMahon and Triple H became one of the most powerful couples in wrestling, Triple H was in a very serious relationship with Chyna, their affair greatly contributing to her departure from the company.
While both tend to be private about the ordeal, McMahon did talk candidly about their courtship during a 2002 appearance on Howard Stern, saying, “He was in love with her at one time but by the time I came around, things weren’t so good. They were still living together but there’s a whole lot more detail I’m not going to go into. By the time Triple H and I started our on-screen storyline, we just had really great chemistry and it just went from there.” She also added that there was an additional wrinkle to their romance seeing as she also happened to be dating someone at the time, saying “He always thought I had the hots for Triple H but I didn’t even realize I did at the time. I was just like, God, no.”
6 Ric Flair Claims Halle Berry Rode Space Mountain
Of all the wrestling affair confessions, this is probably the least surprising. The styling, profiling, son of a gun has more stories of wild trysts with women than there are hours in the day and seeing as he’s been married to one woman or another for almost the entirety of his professional career, it’s not hard to imagine that many of those trips to “space mountain” were adulterous. However in the case of this confession, the affair isn’t as shocking as who it was reportedly with. During a 2016 episode of Flair’s podcast, The Ric Flair Show, the 16-time WWE Champion claimed to have had an affair with Academy Award winning actress, Halle Berry.
Flair said the liaison occurred during the mid-90s. “She was in Atlanta and had just gotten divorced from David Justice.” When his co-host asked him if he was telling the truth, he replied “Would I have to make up a lie?” Berry was divorced from Justice in 1997, meaning that their affair would have taken place in the middle of his second marriage to Elizabeth Harrell (aka Charlotte’s mother) whom he divorced in 2006. Berry for her part, denies Flair’s claims, her representative saying in a statement, “There is literally no truth to this. Halle has literally never even heard of him let alone met him.”
5 Jake The Snake Roberts Bladed During A Match To Cover Up Cheating On His Wife
Jake “The Snake” Roberts has had a hard road since his glory days in the WWE’s Golden Era. His personal demons getting the best of him during his time in the spotlight, Roberts fell to alcohol and drug addiction, eventually turning to Diamond Dallas Page to get his life back on track in 2012. One of the greatest casualties of this was his marriage. Like many wrestlers of his time, Roberts wasn’t immune to sleeping with women who weren’t his wife after shows.
In fact, on a 2015 episode of The Steve Austin Show, Roberts admitted to blading for the first time to cover up cheating on his wife. “I decided I was going to gig myself and tell my old lady that coming out of the arena, somebody hit me with something. I’ll get out of this s***, so I stopped by a K&B drugstore and got Platinum Plus [razor blades], which was the wrong s***. Big, old, thick blade and cut myself. I didn’t do it the right way. I went side-to-side and really overdid it.”
4 Sunny and Shawn Michaels Had A Nine Month Relationship Behind Chris Candido's Back
One of the most enduring WWE urban legends, is the affair between Sunny and Shawn Michaels. Rumors of the alleged hookup have swirled ever since Michaels accused Bret Hart of having some “Sunny days” during a promo on Monday Night Raw in the 90s. In actuality, it was Michaels that the quote-unquote Original Diva of the WWE had engaged in a fling with, and while that may not be salacious on its own, there is the added wrinkle of the fact she was technically still with wrestler Chris Candido at the time. In an interview with YouShoot, Sunny spilled all about the torrid affair, saying that it came at a time when things between her and Candido weren’t so good.
“I never deliberately cheated on Chris,” she said, explaining that there was a time between 1996 and 1997 where they were living apart and taking a break from one another. It’s then that Michaels made his move. “I was in love with Shawn. We were together for about nine months, it was incredible. It was fun, it was exciting, we knew everything about each other.” She said that Michaels even asked her to move in with him but she turned him down in favor of trying to make things work with Candido who reportedly didn’t know about the affair at the time.
Shortly afterwards, Michaels met his current wife and they were married. However, Sunny says she does often wonder what would have happened if she had taken him up on his offer.
3 Bray Wyatt and Jojo Offerman's Affair Ended Wyatt's Marriage
Earlier in 2017, the WWE universe was rocked by news that Wyatt Family leader, Bray Wyatt had reportedly engaged in an affair with 23 year-old ring announcer JoJo Offerman. The revelation sent fans into overdrive, however, it didn’t come from some anonymous internet source, but in court documents filed by his wife Samantha Rotunda, who is seeking a divorce. The accusation set off a nasty war of words between Wyatt and his former wife through their legal counsel, Wyatt filing an injunction to halt her “effort to ruin his reputation.”
However, Rotunda would fire back in court documents, saying that, “His deceitful allegations and defamatory statements are decidedly an attempt to pull the wool over the public’s eyes when his antics and affairs became more public.” Wyatt and Offerman have yet to go public with a relationship since the news broke.
2 Hulk Hogan's Friend Let Him "Borrow" His Wife
During his heyday in the 80s and even his wrestling career renaissance in the mid-nineties, Hulk Hogan was known as one of the most famous wrestlers of all time, an All-American hero and cultural icon for those old enough to remember him body-slamming Andre the Giant at WrestleMania III. However, ask any millennial about The Hulkster and you’ll likely hear about the leak of his, ahem, personal home movies and the resulting Gawker trial. In 2012, a private video secretly recorded of Hogan in bed with the wife of one of his best friends, radio DJ Bubba the Love Sponge, leaked online.
Hogan maintains that Bubba had an open marriage and actually gave him his blessing to bed his wife, however, the video was reportedly recorded six years prior while he was still married to his wife, Linda. During an interview with Howard Stern, Hogan said that his unhappiness in his marriage drove him to take Bubba and Clem up on their offer. “I knew my marriage was really screwed up bad. Until I went through the divorce I didn’t believe that there was such thing as verbal or mental abuse. I didn’t realize that.” Hogan would end up winning his landmark $100 million trial against the website Gawker, however, he would be forced to endure a nasty public divorce in the process.
1 Vince McMahon Comes Clean On His Marriage
On screen, Vince McMahon isn’t just the commanding Mr. McMahon, the WWE’s maniacal CEO but also one of its biggest lothsarios, having engaged in storyline affairs with the likes of Trish Status, Sable, Stacy Keibler and Torrie Wilson. So it isn’t hard to believe that his persona has carried over backstage but during a 2002 interview with Howard Stern, the WWE boss confirmed as much, revealing that there was a time when he’d sleep with “anything in a skirt,” despite having been married to Linda McMahon for almost 30 years at the time.
McMahon said his adulterous ways came to an end in 1996 and while it was hard on his wife as well as his marriage, they were able to work past it. “You wake up one day and you realize that it’s not all about your individual sexual gratification, it’s about relationship. When she married me, I promised her several things. That there’d never be a dull moment, which there hasn’t been and that I’d always love her and I always have.”
