15 Potential Surprises For WrestleMania 33

It has been called “The Showcase of the Immortals”, “The Show of Shows”, "The Greatest Spectacle in Sports Entertainment”, and “The Grandest Stage of Them All”. For over three decades, WrestleMania remains to be one of the biggest events not only in wrestling, but in pop culture. Each show has given us unforgettable moments such as Daniel Bryan conquering the odds, Hogan body slamming Andre the Giant, Stone Cold Steve Austin siding with Mr. McMahon, Randy Savage reuniting with Miss Elizabeth, and Brock Lesnar ending The Undertaker’s undefeated streak. We also hear the most passionate cheers and boos from over 100,000 thousand fans in attendance. No one can deny the energy that WrestleMania produces every year.

With only 32 days left until the next Mania, die-hard and casual fans are eagerly awaiting for what’s in store. We all know that Lesnar and Goldberg will face off again, but the rest of the card is still a mystery. The WWE needs to make this year’s event spectacular, especially since the previous one received an overwhelming negative reaction. So, while we wait for the announcement of the official lineup of matches, we have decided to write down 15 possible surprises for the 33rd edition of WrestleMania. This is based from rumors circulating online and current storylines on television. We will also focus not only on the event itself, but also on the buildup. Some of these have a good chance of happening while the others are better off on fantasy booking. Let’s get right to it…

15 Goldberg Wins Again

via cagesideseats.com

After being embarrassed by Golderg at Survivor Series and Royal Rumble, Brock Lesnar is expected to get his revenge at WrestleMania. However, the WWE has a habit of making things unpredictable every once in a while. Don’t be surprised when the former WCW and WWE World Heavyweight Champion will score another W against the Beast Incarnate. If you also look at how Goldberg is being pushed, you can see him staying a bit longer in the company. Making him 3-0 against Lesnar is a very effective way of putting him over if he decides to do more appearances post Mania. Whatever the result, we just hope that the match won’t be a total squash. These men have a legit background in combat sports, so we deserve to see a fight.

14 Kevin Owens Is Still The Universal Champion

via showbizuniverse.com

Everyone is expecting Kevin Owens to lose his Universal Title against Goldberg at this Sunday’s Fastlane, but don’t place your bets just yet. Like what we said in the previous entry, the WWE has the tendency to shock the viewers. We might see The Beast Incarnate interfere on Owens’ behalf, which will lead to Goldberg losing the match. It will serve as the storyline leading up to the Lesnar vs. Goldberg match on April 2.

If it happens, then Kevin Owens will most likely defend the title on Mania against his former best friend Chris Jericho. Since he had a very impressive run last year, Y2J truly deserves a shot at a major title. Also, who wouldn’t want to see Jericho retaliate after what happened at the Festival of Friendship?

13 The Undertaker Will Face Roman Reigns... And Lose

via dailyddt.com

The 2017 Royal Rumble has plenty of memorable moments, one of which is Roman Reigns eliminating The Undertaker. It led to an intense stare down, which may give way to a WrestleMania confrontation. If they face off at the big stage, you can expect The Deadman to put over The Guy. We need to accept the fact that Vince McMahon will never give up on Roman Reigns. Whether we like it or not, the former Shield member will still be pushed to the moon.

The angle will be more effective if they finally decide to turn Roman Reigns heel. Have him beat The Undertaker at Mania and spend the rest of the year as a legitimate villain who doesn’t speak much. It will give Reigns an opportunity to get heat in a good way, and when the time comes for his face turn, people will accept it.

12 Charlotte Remains The Queen of PPV

via Newsweek.com

Based on the previous booking of the Raw Women’s Championship, Charlotte may regain the title again this Sunday at Fastlane. There’s no word yet on the Women’s title at WrestleMania, but whether Charlotte comes in as a champion or contender, there’s a possibility that she will still be undefeated on pay-per-view. Everyone loves Bayley, but WrestleMania is not always about the babyfaces. Charlotte emerging victorious at the Grandest Stage of Them All will further solidify her status as a top female heel. It’s too early for her record to be broken, so it’s best to keep her undefeated on pay-per-view for at least another year. Some fans may not approve of this, but storyline-wise, it will be beneficial for the babyfaces of the division.

11 The Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal

via wwe.com

The previous Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royals were alright, but it didn’t really elevate the winners. Cesaro is still not a main eventer and Big Show rarely shows up now. As for Baron Corbin, his recent push is not based on his battle royal victory. This year, we may see the WWE raise the standard of the match, especially with the huge number of stars on the roster.

In order for it to be successful, the company needs to add more exciting spots and notable names. It’s the perfect way to put over monster heels such as Braun Strowman and Samoa Joe. They could also give the win to Sami Zayn, Kalisto, or any beloved underdog. Most importantly, the winner should continue to make an impact after the big event.

10 Finn Balor Is Competing

via stillrealtous.com

Finn Balor was supposed to get a huge main roster push, but at SummerSlam 2016, he suffered a devastating shoulder injury. Since surgery was needed, he was forced to relinquish his newly-won Universal Title on Raw the following night. Doctors stated that he will recover in four to six months, so if you look at the calendar now, it’s safe to say that he’s ready to return. The WWE has been relatively quiet about Balor’s current condition, which made us think that something’s in store. Will we see The Demon King compete for the Universal Title or will he face the Phenomenal AJ Styles in an inter-brand match at WrestleMania? No one knows, but one thing is for sure, we’re all excited for Balor’s comeback.

9 The New Day As The Hosts

via tjrwrestling.net

When The New Day announced that they are the hosts of WrestleMania 33, fan reactions were mixed. Some loved the idea while the others were disappointed that they won’t see the popular tag team wrestle. Regardless of what we feel about it, it’s almost certain that the WWE will give us something special. We may witness a highly entertaining segment involving the trio and a legend or a non-wrestling celebrity. The New Day may even be part of a major angle. Whatever the plan is, the WWE won’t just let their most over stable have an uneventful WrestleMania experience. Hopefully, we’ll get to have our New Day ice cream there. For now, we wish the best of luck to Kofi Kingston, Big E, and Xavier Woods!

8 John Cena’s Rumored Match May Turn Out To Be Awesome

via lifeandstylemag.com

At the Royal Rumble, John Cena became a 16-time WWE Champion, tying the Nature Boy Ric Flair’s record. Despite losing the belt at the Elimination Chamber, Mr. Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect is still considered as a legendary superstar. So, when rumors of Cena’s WrestleMania match started spreading, fans were utterly disappointed. John Cena is rumored to team up with his girlfriend Nikki Bella to take on The Miz and Maryse at the Showcase of the Immortals.

Despite the negative reaction, this match actually has the potential to be awesome. The Miz and Maryse are on a roll now as heels and Nikki Bella has shown a lot of improvement when it comes to her in-ring skills. All the WWE needs to do is to make it important. With only four weeks left before the event, the creative team must provide an effective storyline for this feud. They can use The Miz’s win at WrestleMania XXVII against Cena as their basis. By properly booking the match, it can certainly silence all the critics.

7 Conor McGregor Appearance

Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

The UFC Lightweight Champion may have said a few harsh words about the WWE, but we all know that he’s a fan deep inside. From his Ric Flair antics to his Vince McMahon walk, it’s obvious that Conor McGregor is highly influenced by pro wrestling. There have been rumors that he will be appearing at WrestleMania 33, and based on recent events, it may actually happen. Triple H attended UFC 205 to see Mystic Mac fight, which led many to believe that a negotiation took place. McGregor also stated in his January 29 press conference in Manchester that he’s in talks with the company regarding a Mania appearance. Will he get the Ronda Rousey treatment on April 2 or will we he go all heel and cut a promo about the superstars? We’ll just have to wait and see.

6 The Hardcore Match That Ambrose Deserves

via wrestlingrumors.net

Dean Ambrose vs. Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 32 was a total disaster, despite the amazing build up. Instead of seeing a brutal No Holds Barred match, we saw the Lunatic Fringe job to the Beast Incarnate. It wasn’t all bad for Ambrose though. In 2016, he became one of Smackdown’s top faces and has won the WWE and Intercontinental titles. He’s currently feuding with the Lone Wolf Baron Corbin and we may see them collide at WrestleMania 33. Ambrose badly needs a Mania moment, so it would be unwise for the WWE not to give him one. Whether it’s for the IC title or not, the bout should be an unforgettable one. Since Ambrose and Corbin are brawlers, they need to face off in a hardcore match. It’s also Ambrose’s chance to show his true potential as a lunatic character. The creative team must allow him to do some of his antics in the indies in order to for the match to be much more exciting.

5 Seth Rollins Vs. Triple H May Still Happen

via skysports.com

Ever since Triple H turned on Rollins last year, we all expected to see them face off at WrestleMania 33. The seeds were already planted for the feud, but unfortunately, Rollins suffered a knee injury on the January 30th edition of Raw. When the doctors announced that it will take 6-8 weeks for him to recover, fans were optimistic that he will be come back and compete at Mania. However, Rollins claimed last Monday that things are not looking good for him. It was a believable promo, until Triple H came in. The Game mocked The Architect’s injury and Seth retaliated by saying that he WILL BE at the Show of Shows. Based on that segment, it looks like we will see the match happen after all. We’re keeping our fingers crossed.

4 An Exciting Cruiserweight Match

via upgruv.com

After the critically-acclaimed Cruiserweight Classic Tournament last summer, the whole division didn’t really get to make a huge impact on the main roster. We mostly saw random singles and six-man tag matches and cringe worthy storylines like the Noam Dar, Cedric Alexander, and Alicia Fox love triangle. Things changed a bit when Neville turned heel and became the Cruiserweight Champion, but it’s still lacking in terms of matches. Hopefully, at WrestleMania 33, we will see the cruiserweights at their best. The WWE can book a Neville vs. Austin Aries match, since we’ve already seen some subtle exchanges between them, or a multi-man match where everyone will have a an opportunity to shine. They shouldn’t cross out the division in the biggest show of the year.

3 A Spot To Remember

via commons.wikimedia.org

From Edge spearing Jeff Hardy mid-air to Shane McMahon jumping from the top of the Hell in a Cell, WrestleMania always gives us spots that leave us in awe. This year’s Mania will definitely be no different. Will Orton give another impressive RKO outta nowhere? Will Goldberg, Lesnar, Joe, or Stowman do a high-flying move? Will Ambrose perform a death-defying stunt? Will Cena do the Canadian Destroyer from the top rope? The possibilities are endless. For this year, the cruiserweight division is the best choice to provide a spot to remember. It would also be awesome if one of the stars of the Women’s Division steps up. Let’s just hope that the creative won’t overdo it. One or two memorable spots are enough for us.

2 AJ Styles In The Title Picture

via wwe.com

When Bray Wyatt won the WWE title at the Elimination Chamber, it seemed inevitable that he will face Royal Rumble Winner and Wyatt Family member Randy Orton at the main event of WrestleMania. However, things got more interesting when Luke Harper got involved. A Wyatt Family Triple Threat Match looks awesome on paper, but there’s a huge possibility that we will see a fourth man. If you didn’t watch the latest episode of Smackdown, that man is none other than AJ Styles. On the number one contender’s match, The Phenomenal One defeated Luke Harper with a 450 Splash. Harper may have lost the bout, but don’t be surprised if the creative team puts him back on the storyline. So, is it possible that the Smackdown main event at WrestleMania is a Fatal Four Way Match? Most probably! Styles also deserves it after doing very good job on his first year in the company.

1 An Unforgettable Ending

via wwe.com

Who can forgot the moment when Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase or when Stone Cold Steve Austin shook Mr. McMahon’s hand? How about the image of Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero hugging each other after winning their first major titles? Majority of the WrestleMania events often ended memorably, leaving the crowd even more excited for the future. After the disappointing ending of WrestleMania 32, the company should make up for it by closing the April 2 event with a bang. The Goldberg vs. Lesnar match will most likely be the main event, and despite its larger than life status, it has the potential to be a forgettable one. By adding a surprise element, it could pave the way for a historical moment. We certainly believe that something unexpected will happen at the end of Mania 33.
