15 Thing You Didn’t Know About Edge And Beth Phoenix’s Marriage

Glamorously rated R, the relationship of Edge and Beth Phoenix has generally stayed out of the spotlight during the four or five years the couple dated prior to their recent wedding. Most fans of the WWE Universe would agree Edge and Phoenix were both fantastic performers at the peak of their divisions when they were competing, but they didn’t start dating until Edge had completely left the spotlight and Beth was on her way out, so fans understandably don’t know much about Edge and Beth Phoenix, the couple.

More than simply Edge and Beth Phoenix, the couple, the pair also defines themselves as parents, thanks to their two young daughters. A nontraditional couple, Edge and Phoenix had their first daughter three years before they tied the knot and their second daughter was born a few months prior to the wedding. This doesn’t mean the family is anything other than loving, though, as both parents and their two children appear to be the happiest fans have ever seen them.

Unlike certain other WWE couples who live their lives on reality shows, Edge and Beth have been relatively private about their personal affairs. Insiders have still managed to figure out a decent amount and if you’d like to include yourself amongst them, keep reading to learn 15 things you never knew about Edge and Beth Phoenix’s marriage.

15 They've Both Been Married Before

via ringthedamnbell.wordpress.com

Edge and Beth Phoenix didn’t meet until they were in their 30s, so it should come as no surprise that they weren’t exactly one another’s first love. In fact, both of them had been married prior to their relationship, Beth once and Edge twice. Beth’s first husband was independent wrestler Joey Knight, who was also one of her first trainers. Knight has never wrestled for WWE, but he has made a handful of minor appearances, most notably getting his head shaved by Donald Trump at WrestleMania 23 during a practice run of Trump doing the same to Vince McMahon. Edge’s first wife was Alanah Morley, the sister of Val Venis. They married in 2001 and divorced less than four years later. His second marriage, to Lisa Ortiz, was even shorter, barely passing the one-year mark before it was torn apart by a torrid affair. Speaking of which…

14 Edge Had A High Profile Relationship With Beth's Dream Opponent

During Edge’s second marriage, he cheated on his wife with future WWE Hall of Famer and Women’s Champion, Lita. Lita was also in a relationship at the time, with future “Broken” Delete freak, Matt Hardy. Edge used the notoriety he achieved through the affair to turn himself into one of the biggest heels in WWE, ultimately riding that fame to 11 WWE World Championships. Aside from the fact she married Edge years later, Beth Phoenix had nothing to do with the incident, however, she was probably paying attention and might have something interesting to say about it. She’s never made a comment on the matter, but she has named Lita as one of her dream opponents, dating back to before Phoenix and Edge even met. Presumably, Beth’s opinions on Lita may have changed given Edge’s influence, though this doesn’t necessarily mean she wouldn’t want to wrestle her anymore.

13 They Had The Same Trainer

The exact date Edge and Beth Phoenix met isn’t public information, but we can take an educated guess and say it was probably sometime in 2006, when Phoenix made her WWE debut. It could be possible that even Edge and Beth Phoenix themselves don’t remember the exact day they first crossed paths, as they met one another at least four to five years before they actually went out on a date. For much of this time, Phoenix was still married to Joey Knight and Edge was at first with Lita and then presumably other women once that relationship passed its course. All the couple has said about one another at this time was that they were fans of one another’s work, but didn’t seem to talk much. Beth must have been a pretty big fan of her future husband, in fact, considering they both received training from Ron Hutchinson, who Phoenix explained kept photos of his top students, Edge included, lined around the walls as she trained.

12 They Were Champions At The Same Time

via WWE.com

There’s a good chance part of the reason Edge and Beth Phoenix didn’t start dating for so long was the fact they both were busy experiencing sterling careers and multi-time champions. With his 11 reigns as WWE or World Heavyweight Champion, Edge is one of the most decorated male superstars in history, and with three Women’s Championship reigns and one as Divas Champion, Beth didn’t do too bad for herself, either. The future couple actually held their respective division top titles concurrently in 2007, when Beth was Women’s Champion for her first time and Edge defeated Batista to become World Heavyweight Champion for his second. It nearly happened again at the 2009 Royal Rumble, when Edge won the WWE Championship a little after an hour after Beth lost the Women’s Championship to Melina. Beth’s one reign as Divas Champion came several months after Edge retired.

11 They (Technically) Faced Each Other In A WWE Match

via shitloadsofwrestling.com

Even amongst wrestling couples, it has become exponentially rare to see a man and a woman stand in a ring against one another as rivals. Edge and Beth Phoenix are surprisingly one of the few future married couples to wrestle in the same match, although the particular circumstance of said match meant the two were never in the squared circle at the same time. It wasn’t too hard for that to happen, considering the match in question was the 2010 Royal Rumble. Entering that year at number 6, Beth Phoenix became the second woman in WWE history to participate in a Rumble match, with the first having been Chyna 11 years earlier. Beth didn’t last long, but she at least had the glory of eliminating The Great Khali with a scandalous kiss. Rather than dwell on his future wife kissing a giant monster, Edge shocked the WWE Universe by returning from injury after six months and winning the contest.

10 They Started Dated When Edge Retired

via IGN.com

Wrestlers are all aware of the toll their profession takes on a person’s body and the fact there’s a limit to the abuse their bodies will be able to take. Edge discovered that limit in April of 2011 when he was diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis and warned another particularly nasty bump wouldn’t just end his career, it could easily paralyze or even kill him. Obviously, Edge retired almost immediately after receiving this news, giving a gracious speech about having the opportunity to do so as World Champion. The one upside to this series of events was that they indirectly led to Edge and Beth’s relationship beginning, as the couple has explained they didn’t get together until his in-ring career ended. Beth still had about a year and a half left in her career, which she decided to end in October of 2012.

9 Beth Left Wrestling To Spend Time With Family

There are dozens of reasons for a wrestler to retire, although a few are more prominent than others. Unfortunately, the most likely cause is a serious injury, which we all know was the case with Edge. Beth Phoenix had a more light-hearted explanation for leaving wrestling behind, that being a desire to spend more time with her family. Her relationship with Edge was still in its nascent stages and thus it would be fair to speculate Phoenix was referring to her parents, though she did use the phrase “married to the business” in explaining why it was time for her to take a step away. Not long after she put that relationship of sorts to rest, she reconnected with Edge and began dating, eventually creating a small family of their own.

8 They Have Two Daughters

via cagesideseats.com

Often included in the term “spending time with family” can be creating a whole new family, which Edge and Beth Phoenix have begun to do by bringing two young daughters into the world. Their first daughter was born in December of 2013, named Lyric Rose, and their second daughter came two and a half years later in May of 2016, with the name Ruby Ever. According to Edge, the poetic names bestowed upon his daughters were “entirely his call,” with Lyric’s name coming to him when Beth was “mid-contraction.” He continued the poetry with Ruby’s birth announce, made on Twitter, along with the thought he believed his new daughter would “move mountains.” Beth never showed any resistance to the unusual baby names, even given the duress upon which Edge decided the first one.

7 They Have Four Dogs

via dailywrestlingnews.com

In addition to the human members of their family, Edge and Beth Phoenix have also welcomed a number of animal friends into their home, specifically four pet dogs. Edge has been a pronounced pet lover for years and it would probably be safe to assume Beth agrees with him, as he has claimed she tends to do all the work in taking caring of them. That doesn’t mean Edge doesn’t love his canine companions, though, as the Rated R Superstar has been photographed with his pet pups since the days he was still teaming with Christian. While Edge isn’t exactly an activist, he did once speak out against the bizarre Internet trend of putting dogs in pantyhose, going so far as to say the trend “pissed him off” because it made him feel sorry for the dogs. Fans were mostly baffled by the meme, not to mention Edge feeling the need to comment on it, with the one logical explanation being Edge simply cared more about dogs than anyone had previously realized.

6 Beth Went Back To School While Edge Hosted A Comedy Show

via the-peepulation.com

While Edge probably misses the ring sometimes, there are plenty of positives to retirement, such as having unlimited free time to spend with your family. Rather than take this advantage, Edge instead went back to work as an actor on the long-running Syfy series Haven and then starred in his own show on the WWE Network, The Edge And Christian Show That Totally Reeks Of Awesomeness. During the filming of his shows, Edge generally left Beth to take care of the kids and the dogs, a job she was more than prepared to take on. In fact, Beth apparently managed to do it all with time to spare, as she also been working towards a master’s degree in forensic psychology to compliment the bachelor’s degree in criminal justice that she received prior to becoming a pro wrestler.

5 They Were Married On Edge's 43rd Birthday

via lovebirdsblog.com

Hardly a traditional couple in any stretch of the term, Edge and Beth Phoenix waited to tie the knot until after they had already given birth to two children. Five months after their second daughter was born, Edge and Phoenix were married on October 30th, 2016, Edge’s 43rd birthday. The couple never formally announced their engagement, though they did start hinting at it on Twitter as the date neared. Continuing with the low-key theme, rather than spend exorbitantly on a lavish celebrity destination wedding, the two simply had their ceremony near their home in Asheville, North Carolina. In one of the few ways the couple adhered to standard tradition, Beth celebrated the wedding by officially changing her last name to Copeland. Some friends and fans of over-the-top weddings may have been disappointed by the lack of pomp surrounding the affairs, but when a couple has been dating over five years and already has two kids, perhaps they don’t need a big wedding to prove their love.

4 Several WWE Superstars Attended Their Wedding

via sescoops.com

Reflecting the generally intimate setting of their wedding, Edge and Beth Phoenix only invited a number of their closest friends to attend. Obviously, the entire WWE Universe wasn’t on the guest list, but at least a few names fans will recognize were: Natalya Neidhart, Tyson Kidd, and Christian. Christian’s attendance should come as no surprise, considering his tag team with Edge is still considered one of the greatest in WWE history. Natalya likewise has history teaming with Beth and Tyson Kidd came along for the ride as Natalya’s husband. Apparently, Natalya was the one person on the wedding who wasn’t informed things were being kept quiet, as she posted pictures to Twitter from the event, albeit with vague captions. That isn’t to say the couple was mad, as their only response was Beth thanking her for attending and taking good shots.

3 They Love Being Parents

via diva-dirt.com

Edge has been lucky to find ways he could continue his career outside of the ring through his acting, although there are downsides to the long hours on set and on location in that he can’t always spend as much time with his daughters as he’d like. This hasn’t stopped him from taking parenting head on, constantly FaceTiming with his family to remain a powerful presence in their lives. Beth likewise seems to have joyously embraced motherhood, referring to her new nickname of the Glamamom as the one she’s more proud of than any in-ring accomplishment. Edge and Beth’s love for their children likely stems from their love for one another, as Edge has described having a baby as “the most romantic thing in the world.” After those babies were made, Edge has continued finding pleasure in the simplest things, such as his daughters learning to put together words, specifically Lyric telling him he’s her best friend.

2 The Relationship Inspired Edge To Appear On Bookaboo

via toonzone.net

FaceTime and other technological advances have made it vastly easier for busy parents to connect with their children when they have to work long hours far away from home. However, there’s no app that tells you what to talk about with your kids, so Edge came up with his own idea. Feeling that reading is especially important, Edge reads a book to his daughters every night, including nights he’s on location shooting one of his TV shows. He does so via FaceTime, sometimes resorting to sending videos to Beth and the kids through Dropbox if he’s worried he’ll be busy around bedtime. This practice ultimately led Edge to get involved with the Amazon series Bookaboo, featuring celebrities reading children’s books. On Edge’s description, the show is about a dog who plays drums, but needs a good book to energize him before his performances. Should The Edge and Christian Show That Totally Reeks of Awesomeness ever get a season two, maybe fans can look for Bookaboo as a guest star.

1 Beth Has Repeatedly Hinted At Making A Comeback

via WWE.com

Bearing in mind the severity of the injuries forcing him out of the ring, it remains highly unlikely even more than five years later that Edge could ever make a comeback. His wife is a different story, as despite having given birth to two daughters, Beth Phoenix has been hinting at the idea of making a comeback for well over a year now. It would be reasonable to guess her second daughter put the idea of a return on hold, but now she’s past the maternity stage, it might be time for the Glamamom to revert to the Glamazon. A growing trend in the industry has seen wrestlers make comebacks so their children can enjoy their work and, based on interviews, it looks like Beth’s husband would also appreciate the chance to enjoy her in a new light, as well. No official statement has been made and there’s nothing to totally guarantee a comeback, but that won’t stop fans of Edge or Beth alike from keeping their fingers crossed.
