Whenever WWE books a big match between top talents, fans expect to see a clean finish to put somebody over. However, that is not the case regularly. WWE has done this at times throughout history with mixed reactions. Sometimes a countout has worked, while other times it has been met with negative responses from fans.

7 The Miz vs. John Cena (WrestleMania 27)

While this match did officially end with The Miz winning, the fact is that technically it stopped with a countout first. Because this was the main event of WrestleMania, the fact that the encounter ended in a draw was something nobody expected.

John Cena and The Miz ended up brawling outside of the ring, which led to them finishing things in a countout. Thankfully, The Rock would restart the match, but the original encounter ended in a countout, much to the frustration of the fans.

6 Tag Team Title Gauntlet Match (SmackDown, 3/26/19)

This particular match had serious WrestleMania implications, which is what made it an important one in WWE's history. The encounter saw The New Day have to run a gauntlet to earn Kofi Kingston a WWE Championship match at WrestleMania.

In the end, it came down to New Day taking on Daniel Bryan and Erick Rowan and this finished in a countout. Big E and Xavier Woods took out Rowan and decided to flip the announce table on top of him, winning via countout, which put over Rowan as a monster.

5 Rick Martel vs. Shawn Michaels (SummerSlam, 1992)

The 1992 SummerSlam event is one of the most famous in history and it is a show that is still talked about to this day. Every match on the card had plenty of build and focus, which included Shawn Michaels competing against Rick Martel.

However, this one resulted in a double countout, with neither man managing to benefit from the victory in this one. Sensational Sherri influenced this one ending in this manner as she fainted to gain both of their attention and they spent so long arguing that the match ended.

4 Lex Luger vs. Yokozuna (SummerSlam, 1993)

Just one year later at SummerSlam, WWE decided to do another countout finish in a big match, this time in the main event. Lex Luger was challenging for the WWE Championship on this show, which was held by Yokozuna at the time.

The story certainly played up to their size difference, with Luger having to work hard to overcome the situation. He was able to send the champion out of the ring, and he won the match by countout, which meant there was no title change.

3 Hunter Hearst Helmsley vs. Mankind (Canadian Stampede, 1997)

While this was before the Triple H gimmick was born, even at this stage Hunter Hearst Helmsley was one of the top stars in the company, and this rivalry was a big one at the time. They pushed an aggressive style throughout this one and made it seem like they hated each other.

The two men brawled throughout the match and it eventually spilled to the outside. They headed through the fans and finished up in a parking lot brawl. Of course, by this point, the 10 count had been reached which ended the contest.

2 Edge vs. Randy Orton (Over The Limit, 2010)

Randy Orton and Edge have always been great rivals and in 2010 they engaged in one of their many feuds. The two men pushed each other to their limits in this match, having had a great encounter that ended up spilling to the outside.

After Edge missed with a Spear and slammed into the barricade, neither man was able to get back into the ring. The two men were both counted out on this particular occasion, with the contest ending as a draw.

1 AJ Syles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura (Backlash, 2018)

This is an example of a match ending via count out that people were not happy about. Fans wanted to see AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura go to war with each other in a classic wrestling match, but the finish ended up being a strange one.

Even though there was a no disqualification stipulation on this match, the company had them basically get counted out due to a double low blow. Neither man made the count, which was a poor finish for two men as talented as this, especially when the WWE Title was on the line.
