The biggest party of the summer is right around the corner and the build up this year has been one of the best in a while. The show this weekend could actually live up to the hype.
SummerSlam boasts a Fatal-Four-Way Universal Championship match between four of the biggest stars in WWE right now, with the added stipulation that if Brock Lesnar loses, he will walk away from WWE.
There is a tense atmosphere in WWE right now, all surrounding the main event. Another huge match sees Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose put aside their differences and attempt to become Tag Team Champions together for the first time.
Over on SmackDown, Jinder Mahal defends the WWE Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura knowing that Baron Corbin will still want revenge after this past week's events. Of course, Naomi will also be in action against former Divas Champion Natalya, but she will also be looking over her shoulder for Miss Money in the Bank Carmella, who isn't in action on Sunday night.
This year's SummerSlam is building up to be an explosive night. Here are 20 of the boldest predictions ahead of the event.
20. Rusev Will Come Out On Top Against Randy Orton
Rusev returned to action in WWE back on July 4th and instantly reclaimed his position as the villain he used to be before he required surgery and missed WrestleMania 33. Rusev stepped into a familiar feud with John Cena and the duo collided in a Flag Match at Battleground. One which Rusev should have won.
Cena came out on top, but he did make Rusev look strong. After a feud with the 16-time Champion, Rusev has moved on to one of Cena's favouite opponents in Randy Orton, knowing full well he needs to win this match to avoid being given the label as a star who isn't in favor in WWE right now. Rusev is a talented, future star in WWE while Orton is in the position where he should be putting younger stars over.
19. Neville Will Fail To Reclaim His Cruiserweight Championship
The biggest star of The Titus Brand did the unthinkable on Monday Night when he was able to defeat Neville and lift the Cruiserweight Championship. Neville has brushed aside the likes of Rich Swann, TJ Perkins, Jack Gallagher, and even Austin Aries as challengers for the championship since he won it at Royal Rumble. But Akira Tozawa finally had what it takes to dethrone The King of the Cruiserweights.
Neville will definitely put up a fight on Sunday night, but it is the wrong option to turn the championship into a hot potato after everything Neville has done with it over the past few months. It's time for The Titus Brand to have some legitimacy for a few months.
18. Shane McMahon And Kevin Owens Will Continue To Build A Feud
There is only ever one reason why a special guest referee is chosen for a match and Shane McMahon doesn't exactly have a squeaky clean record when it comes to refereeing matches. That being said, there have been a number of rumors suggestingt that Shane and Kevin Owens have a lengthy feud ahead of them, which could become quite interesting.
Shane and AJ Styles put their differences aside following their match at WrestleMania so Shane will definitely be the thorn in Owens' side on Sunday night. There will obviously be hints of a future match between the Commissioner and the former Universal Champion.
17. Natalya Will Win The Women's Championship
While it's great that Naomi was able to win the Women's Championship after seven years with the company, honestly, what has she done with the title since she won it at WrestleMania? Nothing. She's defended it in easy matches against Lana and then danced around an actual match with Charlotte.
It's time for Natalya to be given the chance she deserves. If Nattie wins then the WWE Universe could finally see another epic Flair vs. Hart showdown in the near future for the Women's Championship. It's Nattie's time to shine. WWE needs to let The Queen of Black Harts come out on top this Sunday.
16. Enzo Amore Will Turn On The Big Show
Enzo Amore and Big Show together doesn't make any sense. Enzo has so much heat backstage and so much bad press coming out of WWE right now, that it does makes sense for him to turn heel on Big Show and perhaps even controversially realign with his former tag team partner.
Of course, it is also likely that The Club could make their presence known on Sunday night as well if Enzo and Big Show somehow gain the upper hand. Enzo is smart and Big Show is injured so you have to believe that they have something up their sleeve when it comes to the shark cage hanging above the ring. Let's hope if allows this feud to move forward in a much more interesting way.
15. Carmella Will Cash In Her Money In The Bank Briefcase
Carmella is the holder of the Money in the Bank case and she has James Ellsworth back. This means that she can easily cash in on whoever the champion is following Naomi vs. Natalya on Sunday night.
Carmella isn't actually in action herself. So it would make sense for her to be fresh and out to win a championship in Brooklyn, New York, which technically considered to be her home state. But will they take the title off Nattie if she does win on Sunday? It would be great if WWE decides it's time for Carmella to win the title. So, we may not see that Hart vs. Flair showdown after all.
14. Alexa Bliss Will Retain Her Women's Championship
Sasha Banks wasn't even supposed to be in this match. Bayley should have been fighting for her chance at redemption against Alexa Bliss. But instead, Sasha was the one given the nod following Bayley's injury.
Nia Jax would have been a great option since Bliss and Jax have become good friends. But WWE's default option is always to push the Sasha button as she could become a four-time Women's Champion on Sunday night. Alexa is a fantastic champion. She has changed the Women's Division on both Raw and SmackDown and there is no reason why Sasha should take the title. she hasn't proved that she could do anything any different than she did when she was first champion last year.
13. Kevin Owens Will Fail To Reclaim His United States Championship
Let's be honest: Shane McMahon has to cost Kevin Owens the chance to reclaim his United States Championship from AJ Styles, the man who took the title from him at a live event in Madison Square Garden last month. Owens and McMahon have their own issues, as explained above ,and it seems like too much of a build up for them to not have some kind of exchange at SummerSlam as well.
It's not like AJ has a shortage of challengers if Owens fails to capture the title and then goes into a feud with Shane. It would be a good way to end the Styles/Owens feud and finally move them onto something new. Shane and Owens could then have an interesting rivalry heading into Survivor Series in a few months time.
12. Baron Corbin Will Defeat John Cena
John Cena himself has stated that he returned to WWE because he knows that his time as a full-time Superstar in WWE is numbered. He is back to put young talent over and Baron Corbin is a future WWE Champion. Cena cost Corbin the chance to be champion this past week on SmackDown. Baron deserves to defeat Cena to exact his revenge on the 16-time World Champion and walk away with the rub of that defeat ahead of his next feud.
Cena failed to put Rusev over at Battleground a few weeks ago so now it's time for him to redeem himself and give Baron good footing before he heads off to start wrestling for the Raw brand following the Brooklyn event.
11. Shinsuke Nakamura Will Win The WWE Championship
Jinder Mahal only became WWE Champion because WWE wanted to patronize their audience. They really thought that Indian fans would see Jinder as a reason to watch the product. Instead, the rest of the world has seen him as a reason to turn the wrestling off and now WWE needs to fix this.
Shinsuke Nakamura is a well-respected wrestler all over the world and he proved that he has what it takes to be WWE Champion when he defeated John Cena clean on SmackDown to earn this opportunity. Nakamura can't really speak on the mic and many think that this could be his drawback as champion, but Nakamura could surprise a lot of fans if WWE give him the chance. Look how great he was as NXT Champion.
10. Finn Balor Will Defeat Bray Wyatt
The Demon King returns for the first time since SummerSlam 2016 when he became Universal Champion. Finn Balor is always much stronger when he brings The Demon and Bray Wyatt will realize this on Sunday night.
Bray isn't the only star who can play mind games. He may have met his match with Finn and I don't expect this feud to end after this match. This could be an interesting rivalry for a number of months. Finn has to come out on top if WWE is to continue their pattern of 50/50 booking since Bray already won the first match between these two this past week on Raw.
9. Baron Corbin Will Interfere In The WWE Championship Match
Baron Corbin and Shinsuke Nakamura have history. And after Baron cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on SmackDown Live this week, but John Cena cost him his opportunity. You can bet that Baron will be wanting some form of revenge.
After he has beaten John Cena, Baron will obviously want to go on to make sure Nakamura and Mahal don't forget that he is also a threat to the title. Baron no longer has his Money in the Bank contract which means that he no longer has a guaranteed shot at the WWE Championship. So he will have to be creative to ensure that he remains in the title picture. If Nakamura does win the title then given their recent history, Corbin could easily step in as his next challenger.
8.The New Day Will Retain Their Tag Team Championship
The New Day step into the ring with The Usos, the duo that they defeated back at Battleground to become Tag Team Champions. But the former champions have enforced their rematch clause and after weeks of mind games and sneak attacks, the teams will finally be forced to go head to head in the ring.
The New Day have already proved their pedigree when it comes to tag team wrestling and it's unlikely that The Usos will be able to overcome the numbers game in order to reclaim their titles. This match will definitely be one of the best of the night, once again, but The New Day will walk out with their titles around their waist.
7. Big Cass Will Defeat Big Show
Big Cass has been thrown into the deep end as a heel over the past few months and he doesn't seem to be swimming through the current at all. Cass has never had to work as a heel, but working with a veteran like Big Show should definitely help him when it comes to matches and being able to ask for advice.
Big Show is also in a position where he should be putting over the future stars of the company and if rumors are to be believed, then Cass has to win the match in order for Enzo to turn heel on Big Show. It all feels legit. It is just confusing as to whether or not the WWE Universe will even care about this feud if it continues after Sunday night.
6. Sanity Will Be Revealed As Fandango's Kidnappers
Over the past few weeks, the WWE Universe has been witnesses to some of the greatest storytelling that WWE has ever allowed as Fashion Peaks has become a hit on SmackDown TV. Fandango was kidnapped and Tyler Breeze has decided that they will finally find answers at SummerSlam.
With The Ascension already ruled out as suspects, many of the WWE Universe have turned their attention to NXT and who could be the ones behind it. Tag Team Champions, The Authors of Pain don't seem the kidnapping type, but Sanity could easily be considered especially given the mental state of many of the members. It would be fantastic if Sanity were finally revealed to be the ones behind the attacks the entire time.
5. Jason Jordan And The Miz Will Continue Their Rivalry
It's shocking that The Miz hasn't been forced to put his Intercontinental Championship on the line against the son of Raw General Manager Kurt Angle. Over the past few weeks, The Miz has once again tried to prove that he has a problem with authority and continues to be a thorn in Angle's side.
Perhaps this match could be announced for the show later in the week, but it's slightly odd that The Miz is the only champion on both WWE brands that isn't defending his championship on Sunday night. So, hopefully this will change and Jordan will be given a shot at the leader of The Miztourage.
4. NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III Will Set The Tone For The Weekend
WWE made the mistake of putting NXT the night before the main roster's pay-per-view events a long time ago. And so far this plan seems to have failed. NXT has been stealing pay-per-view weekends ever since the first NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn when Sasha Banks and Bayley stole the show.
This weekend Asuka and Ember Moon step up alongside Bobby Roode and Drew Galloway as they look to prove that NXT is still the phenomenon that it once was. The Barclays Centre has been a fantastic venue for NXT over the past three years and this weekend will only further prove this point.
3. Jon Jones Will Make An Appearance To Set Up A Match With Lesnar
WWE is milking the fact that Jon Jones and Brock Lesnar have issues and have been using it as a reason why Brock would walk away from the company if he loses his Universal Championship. The problem is that Brock has missed the deadlines for drug based testing so that he can perform in UFC this year. So he won't actually have anywhere to go if he leaves.
That being said, there is nothing stopping Jon Jones from turning up at SummerSlam and ensuring that fans know that the fight is on the cards even if it has to happen early in 2018. It's a great way to continue to build interest in their showdown and if he costs Brock the title or even attempts to involve himself in the match, it could only make the entire scenario even more interesting.
2. Dean Ambrose And Seth Rollins Will Become Tag Team Champions
The loudest pop of the night this past week on Monday NightRaw was when two grown men decided to fist bump in the middle of the ring. It was, of course, former Shield brothers Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose and it was the WWE Universe expressing their pleasure that the former friends were finally back on the same page.
Ambrose has been teasing a heel turn for a long time and it would be long overdue if Ambrose cost Rollins a chance at his first championship since Money in the Bank back in 2016. Finally getting revenge for the break up of The Shield. It is much more likely that Rollins and Ambrose will go on to become Tag Team Champions on Sunday night since WWE are aware of how invested the crowd are in their current storyline.
1. Brock Lesnar Will Retain His Universal Championship
Brock Lesnar is in the fight of his life on Sunday night as he steps into the ring against three of the biggest men in WWE right now. Lesnar also has the added stipulation that if he loses the Universal Championship then he will leave WWE.
This feels unlikely. Lesnar will manage to see off Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman, and Samoa Joe and have a lengthy reign as Universal Champion to ensure that he builds up some credibility after he was pinned by Goldberg last year. This is the perfect match for a SummerSlam event and is the reason many fans are hyped. But it is hard to see Brock losing the title.
