5 Huge Takeaways From Monday Night Raw (10/31/2016)

Monday Night Raw takes place one night after a controversial night at Hell in a Cell. History was made with Charlotte defeating Sasha Banks to win the Raw Women’s Championship once again. The two women delivered a memorable performance as the first of their gender to have a match inside of the Hell in a Cell structure. Charlotte winning felt like a peculiar decision and we have to wonder what’s next for both ladies. Kevin Owens pulled off another heel victory inside of the cell by defeating Seth Rollins with the help of Chris Jericho.

The next few episodes of Raw will likely focus on the teams being forced for the three Raw vs. Smackdown matches taking place at Survivor Series in three weeks. Stephanie McMahon and Mick Foley picking the best wrestlers for the male, female and tag team cross-promotional matches could play a huge factor on Raw tonight.

Goldberg is also returning two weeks after his incredible appearance cutting a passionate promo accepting Brock Lesnar’s challenge. Following last week’s disappointing promo by Lesnar and Paul Heyman, Goldberg has a tough road trying to add momentum back into their feud with the big match coming up at Survivor Series.

5. Goldberg stands tall at expense of Rusev

The show opened to a hot start with Goldberg making his way to the ring. Goldberg could not say much before Paul Heyman interrupted him. The advocate of Lesnar spoke on behalf of his client and trolled the fans by fooling them into believing Lesnar would be appearing to confront Goldberg. Someone did manage to make his way to the ring and get in Goldberg’s face.

Rusev chastised Goldberg for no longer being able to compete at a high level given his age. As expected, Goldberg destroyed Rusev by hitting him with the Jackhammer. Goldberg also hit a Spear on Heyman and left the venue to a huge ovation. The booking of Goldberg looking like a destructive force is great but Rusev was the wrong person to endure the beating.

Rusev is supposed to be a noteworthy heel in the upper echelon on WWE. This was another example of WWE sacrifice young talent for the sake of legends returning for one match.

4. New era of the cruiserweight division

A surprising title change at Hell in a Cell saw Brian Kendrick defeat TJ Perkins to become the new Cruiserweight Champion. The move made sense. Perkins was great during the Cruiserweight Classic but is clearly not connecting on the main roster. Rich Swann and Cedric Alexander have appeared to be better choices in the top face role. Kendrick is head and shoulders above the division due to his past WWE stint making him familiar to the average fan.

Raw featured the rematch and the title change is already paying off. The belt looks more fitting with Kendrick allowing him to add depth to his character having to protect his late career title reign. Perkins looked more impressive chasing the title rather than having the pressure of carrying it. The Raw match was going well until Perkins hit a very dangerous hurricanrana over the top rope. Kendrick got intentionally counted out and the feud will continue. The division is better off with the new champion until someone is popular enough to dethrone him.

3. Halloween antics grow old

The fact that Halloween happened to fall on a Monday this year meant you know WWE would implement it into Raw. There were a few references during the show and it definitely ran its course. The best Halloween related moment saw all three members of the New Day dress as the three faces of Charles Wright. Big E dressed as Kama Mustafa, Xavier Woods rocked the Papa Shango outfit and Kofi Kingston was The Godfather during a backstage segment. That was the peak of the Halloween moments.

A match between Enzo Amore and Luke Gallows took place under the rules of a “Trick or Street Fight.” The two men hit each other with pumpkins and other Halloween themed items. Gallows and Karl Anderson looked legitimate after a huge win over Enzo and Big Cass at Hell in a Cell. Both men getting hit with pies and pumpkins just destroyed any credibility. It sent them right back to square one. The worst moment of the night featured Byron Saxton dress as a baby. Thank goodness Halloween isn’t on a Monday every year.

2. Charlotte reigns supreme

Another PPV title shot means another Raw Women’s Championship reign for Charlotte Flair. The third title reign of Charlotte came at the expense of Sasha Banks in the history making match. Charlotte’s new story sees her lead the Raw women’s team against Nikki Bella and Team Smackdown at Survivor Series in a few weeks. The first two members announced for her team are Bayley and Nia Jax.

Charlotte ran down Bayley for being the weakest link and put her in a match against Jax in hopes of toughing her up. The story being set up appears to have a big match between Charlotte and Bayley coming up in the near future. Jax defeated Bayley much to the delight of Charlotte. The lack of Sasha Banks on Raw tonight was likely meant to sell the brutality of her loss inside of the Hell in a Cell structure. Banks and Dana Brooke are the favorites to land the final two spots on the Raw team with the rebranded Emmalina having a chance as well.

1. Team Raw is a fascinating mess

...and the final member of #TeamRaw is #BraunStrowman! #WWE #RAW

The team of the five best male singles star on Raw has been formed for the Survivor Series match against Smackdown. Kevin Owens, Chris Jericho and Roman Reigns were the first three names announced by Mick Foley. Braun Strowman won the next spot in a battle royal by eliminating Sami Zayn last. The final member of the team was not officially named but was made clear at the end of the show with Seth Rollins rounding out the dysfunctional group.

Jericho challenged Reigns for the United States Championship in the main event of Raw. Reigns won the match by disqualification when Owens attacked him. The best friends double teamed Reigns until Rollins made the save. Rollins and Reigns technically being on the same side is fascinating given their long history of hatred following The Shield breaking up. Raw’s team has a lot of factors in play.

Rollins hates Owens and Jericho. Reigns hates Owens and Jericho. Rollins and Reigns dislike each other. Strowman has a problem with everyone. The road to Survivor Series will be an interesting path with an intriguing team having to get on the same page.
