Most businesses have some sort of policy on interoffice dating, to protect both the employees and the company itself from any liability should things go south. For whatever reason, World Wrestling Entertainment has never adopted any such guidelines, nor has any mainstream sports entertainment enterprise. Since they travel in such close quarters and have nothing stopping them, countless wrestlers have taken advantage of the industry looking the other way about personal romance, happily hooking up with coworkers in peace, without it ever affecting their job…at least in theory.

The truth is, not every wrestling romance is made the same. There have been dozens of male and female superstars to find the happily ever after sort of love while working for WWE, yet there have probably been even more short term flings that ended in heartbreak or outright chaos. In the worst cases, careers were also damaged or even lost due to the fall out of particularly horrible break ups.

With all this in mind, it’s fair to say wrestlers should always think twice before heading into a romance. Given certain wrestling couples high profiles, most fans have been able to predict whether or not a couple would last pretty much from the start, but the wrestlers themselves haven’t always been so lucky. Keep reading to learn about 8 wrestling couples who were perfect for one another and 7 who didn’t fit at all.

15 15. PERFECT FIT: Sable and Brock Lesnar

via bloodyelbow.com

In spite of a 12-year age gap, Brock Lesnar and Sable have been happily married for more than a decade now. If anything, the difference in their ages somehow makes perfect sense, fitting Lesnar’s image to a T. From the very beginning, Lesnar was the most stereotypical jock imaginable, more focused on working out and improving his physical performance than anything else. Another thing this cliché tends to accomplish is receiving an incredible amount of attention from older women at a young age. Back when Brock was a young man growing into the Beast Incarnate he would become, Sable’s status as the most popular woman in WWE made her a likely object of his youthful affections. Once Brock was a little bit older and he actually met Sable, his romantic pursuit was instant and swift, much like his mastery over the wrestling world.

14 14. DIDN’T WORK: “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Debra

via pinterest.com

From the moment they started appearing on television together, it was clear “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and his third wife Debra didn’t exactly possess the chemistry one would expect of a happily married couple. Of course, part of the problem was that Debra never had much chemistry with anyone, let alone charisma, one of the most blatant examples of a woman hired only for her looks in WWE history. The more integral Debra became to Austin’s storylines, the less people cared about the Texas Rattlesnake, even as he feuded against an equally popular superstar in The Rock. That’s not even mentioning their horribly volatile relationship behind the scenes, with Debra repeatedly accusing Austin of abuse, once officially charging him with domestic battery. It should go without saying that Debra didn’t deserve this treatment, nor does any woman, and as such, Austin never deserved her in the first place, regardless of his fame or relative star power.

13 13. PERFECT FIT: The Miz and Maryse

via wrestlingrumors.net

He’s The Miz, and she thinks he’s awesome. There’s no greater testament to how well The A-Lister and his wife Maryse work together than the fact pairing them up onscreen greatly revitalized Miz’s career. Almost the second Maryse made her return and stood by her husband’s side, he turned into a main event level superstar after almost a decade of teetering near the top. The two have incredible chemistry in their promos and backstage skits, especially during their feud with John Cena and Nikki Bella, during which the alleged heels clearly made a better couple than the heroic faces. Part of what makes them work so well is their similar personalities, putting a love of fame and stardom above all else, creating a particularly photogenic couple. Unfortunately, WWE looks to be breaking them up onscreen for no good reason, except maybe that they were working so well it was getting cheers.

12 12. DIDN’T WORK: “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth

via Twitter.com

Let’s face it—no matter how iconic the pairing has rightfully become, the entire point of the relationship between “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth was that the boorish showboat Savage didn’t deserve his quietly glamorous girlfriend. No one understood what the beautifully reserved woman saw in the outrageous madman, which was exactly what made them such a perfect fit onscreen. Unfortunately, most rumors indicate their onscreen relationship was a little bit too similar to the real one, and Savage being a jerk to his doting wife is a lot less entertaining outside of a wrestling ring. For this reason, their marriage was always a volatile one, ironically splitting apart in real life when they were kayfabe married in the ring at SummerSlam 1991. They would divorce by the next year, already having faded apart on TV. Though they worked together again in WCW, the relationship never rekindled when cameras weren’t rolling.

11 11. PERFECT FIT: Rusev and Lana

via comicbook.com

Though they started as an impression of Ivan and Ludmilla Drago from Rocky IV, before long, it became clear that Rusev and Lana were the couple truly fit for a Hollywood film. Aside from Lana’s Russian accent being a little bit lacking, the two seemed absolutely perfect for one another from the moment they debuted in NXT. Since moving up to the main roster, Lana and Rusev have been integral to one another’s success, making it all the more confusing why WWE seems so intent on breaking the two up. Luckily, the efforts of Vince McMahon have largely failed, as the couple themselves remain happily married. In fact, the first time WWE tried to split them apart on stage, they directly defied bosses orders to quiet things down on social media by happily announcing they were married.

10 10. DIDN’T WORK: David Flair and Stacy Keibler

via imgur.com

On paper, the son of the legendary “Nature Boy” Ric Flair probably should have inherited some of his father’s trademark charisma, let alone some of his talents in the ring. Unfortunately, this wasn’t quite the case for David Flair inside or out of the ring. Nonetheless, David was at least lucky enough to have learned a thing or two about romance from the old man, at least insofar as was necessary to spend a few years dating Stacy Keibler. Of course, no one really understood what Stacy saw in the kid, feeling she had far more star power than the young Flair ever possessed. Unsurprisingly, the relationship didn’t last long, with Keibler apparently wanting more than Flair could offer. Not to speak ill of the dead, but her next wrestling boyfriend Test seemed like he was way beneath Stacy’s league, as well. It wasn’t until Stacy started dating Hollywood actors and married a millionaire in real life that she found a man deserving of her attention.

9 9. PERFECT FIT: Edge and Beth Phoenix

via cagesideseats.com

With all due respect to the Rated R Superstar, the main reason Edge earned that nickname relates to his relationship with Lita, which didn’t paint him in the best light. As most wrestling fans know, that couple came together when both were heavily engaged in other relationships, Lita having dated Matt Hardy for several years and Edge actually married to a woman named Lisa Ortiz. With beginnings that tumultuous, it isn’t surprising things between them fell apart pretty quickly. Luckily for Edge, he’s since moved on to a relationship with “The Glamazon” Beth Phoenix, and this time around there seems to be way less drama involved. The two have been married for a little under a year now and together for three years prior to that, and currently have two daughters. This is the first relationship Edge has had resulting in children, hopefully meaning this is finally the one that’s going to stick.

8 8. DOESN’T WORK: John Cena and Nikki Bella

via dailymotion.com

Forget about the much ballyhooed in-ring proposal and all the media coverage it received. Anyone who watches Total Divas or Total Bellas and sees the way John Cena and Nikki Bella interact know the two simply don’t work as a couple. It was even worse when they brought their relationship into WWE storylines, and The Miz and Maryse mocked them every single week for their complete lack of chemistry. Fans of the couple should have been long aware things weren’t entirely right between them from the moment it became public knowledge Cena required Bella to sign a massive contract before he let her live with him. Cena runs his house and relationship more like a dictatorship than a partnership, making it extremely curious what it is Nikki sees in him. All that said, if the couple are actually happy together, our opinions on how they appear together don’t really matter.

7 7. PERFECT FIT: Daniel Brian and Brie Bella

via stillrealtous.com

While the would-be WWE super couple that is John Cena and Nikki Bella don’t exactly work out in the eyes of many fans, at least they have Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella to show them what a good marriage actually looks like. For all the woodenness between Cena and Nikki, there is nothing but warmth and love whenever Brie and Daniel are onscreen in Total Divas or Total Bellas. More importantly to wrestling fans, when they were paired up onscreen in a number of storylines, the couple actually looked like they cared about one another, unlike some random duos thrown together despite a lack of true chemistry. It makes sense, since they’ve been together more than five years at this point, getting married in 2014 after three years of dating. Recently, they’ve also welcomed their first daughter into the world, named Birdie Joe Danielson.

6 6. DIDN’T WORK: Goldust and Terri

via pinterest.com

In fairness, Dusty Rhodes might have been taking things a little too far when he warned his son Dustin that Terri Boatright was only after his money and the fame attached to the Rhodes name. That said, the couple still didn’t quite work out together, having both admitted the relationship was highly volatile and loaded with arguments. Granted, Dusty’s accusations may have caused some of these arguments, yet the mere fact Dustin believed his dad was a sign the two lasted the trust necessary for a long-term relationship. Things didn’t get any better when they two had a daughter named Dakota, although on the bright side, both have also claimed they get along a lot better since they’ve been divorced, citing her as the reason. Unfortunately, bad relationships could be a pattern for Goldust and Terri alike, with both experiencing several horrible partners after breaking up.

5 5. PERFECT FIT: Cesaro and Sara Del Rey

via sportskeeda.com

Truth be told, there’s not much information out there to confirm if “The Swiss Sensation” Cesaro is still with his long-term girlfriend, indy wrestler Sara Del Rey. However, considering how good the two seem together on paper, it’s hard to imagine them getting into any relationship troubles. Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s take a second to introduce Del Rey to the fans who might not recognize her name. After years of wrestling for women focused wrestling companies like Shimmer, she was hired by the WWE Performance Center to be the assistant head coach, and has since been imparting her wisdom inside the ring to younger up-and-coming talents. Upon her hiring, Del Rey was the first female trainer hired by the center. Cesaro likewise possesses second-to-none wrestling ability, which is just one of many things the quietest super couple in wrestling have in common.

4 4. DIDN’T WORK: Sunny and Chris Candido

via YouTube.com

Look, it doesn’t matter how long a couple are together or how in love they claim to be. If one partner is constantly cheating on the other, sometimes with long-term secondary boyfriends she proudly brags about almost marrying, the core relationship was simply not going to work out. Quite frankly, most people who know the full story about Sunny’s relationship with Chris Candido wind up feeling bad for the guy, knowing she cheated on him with about half of the ECW locker room, a few top stars in WWE, plus who knows how many wrestlers on the independent scene. It isn’t anyone’s intention to mock Sunny for this activity, as she’s allowed to do whatever she wants in her personal life, but it nonetheless had to sting Candido knowing the alleged love of his life wanted to be with practically everyone except him.

3 3. PERFECT FIT: Dean Ambrose and Renee Young

via cagesideseats.com

Lunatics need love too, and as luck would have it, they tend to find it in the arms of extremely accepting partners. For Dean Ambrose, this calm understanding was found in WWE announcer Renee Young, with whom he has engaged in a relationship since 2013. They got together pretty much immediately upon both winding up on the WWE main roster, with Dean wasting no time in making his interest known, and Renee in turn reciprocating those feelings in short order. Strangely, some fans on Tumblr haven’t taken too kindly to this relationship, going so far as to send Renee death threats over the situation. It should go without saying that sort of reaction is outright absurd not to mention illegal. On top of that, it doesn’t make any sense, since the two seem perfect together, and they proved they know it by getting married earlier this year.

2 2. DIDN’T WORK: Triple H and Chyna

via stillrealtous.com

On the one hand, all one needs to do in order to figure out why Triple H and Chyna got together is looking at their comparable physiques. Chances are the two spent plenty of long nights together in the gym getting to know one another, and we don’t even want to think about how those workouts might have ended. Outside of this shared love of athletics, however, there’s not a whole lot The Game had in common with the Ninth Wonder of the World. For every way Triple H was focused on taking over the world of wrestling, Chyna was an absolute mess, descending further into drug abuse and delusion as her erstwhile boyfriend gradually climbed up the wrestling ladder. By the time Triple H was a bona fide main event star, he no longer felt the need to keep Chyna around, moving on to a woman more suited to his interests.

1 1. PERFECT FIT: Triple H and Stephanie McMahon

via dailyddt.com

Now that’s more like it. Who could be more perfect than the politically minded schemer doing whatever it takes to one day own the WWE Universe than the daughter of the man who currently holds that position? Granted, we’re not joining the cynical people in saying that Triple H is only interested in his wife Stephanie McMahon for her money and family name, but let’s face it—that status is definitely part of why they seem so good together. It’s not just that Stephanie was born into wrestling royalty, but her father’s influence has made her as power-hungry and focused on domination as her husband. While Triple H spent his whole life wanting to be the King of Kings, Stephanie was born the Billion Dollar Princess, making it inevitable she'd one day become the Queen of Queens, practically making this an arranged marriage from the day they met.
