Adam Cole has been named PWI's Wrestler of the Year, and Chris Jericho is not best pleased about coming second.

2019 was a blockbuster year for the wrestling business. Perhaps the most important year in the industry since the fall of WCW. That was due in large part to the emergence and ascension of AEW. Not only did the new promotion immediately become the number two company behind WWE, but it also forced the hand of NXT and now we're in the midst of a Wednesday Night War.

Best of all, for the wrestling purist at least, both AEW and NXT have led to Wednesday nights becoming can't miss for wrestling fans. Whichever brand fans choose to watch live, they're almost guaranteed to be entertained. The two companies combined have been responsible for some of the best moments in the business during the past year.

Which is likely why PWI naming its wrestler of the year was such a close-run thing. The magazine revealed that Adam Cole won its prestigious award for the past 12 months, but the vote was the closest it has been for more than a decade. In second place was AEW Champion, Chris Jericho who has not reacted well to finishing behind his black and gold branded counterpart.

Jericho replied, "What?? What was the count?" to PWI's original tweet, which has since been deleted and reworded. "@IAmJericho was the runner-up in the closest voting in a decade," PWI clarified in the new tweet. Pretty cool that the top two spots have gone to the respective World Champions of the dueling brands. Two brands that are arguably the best in wrestling as of right now.

As for who deserves the number one spot, we think giving Cole the edge over Jericho is definitely the right choice. Mainly because Cole has wrestled a lot more over the past year than Jericho. The AEW Champ competed in a handful of matches prior to the launch of Dynamite and has enjoyed a lot more exposure since. Cole was putting on match of the year contenders all year long, way before NXT went live on USA.
