In pro wrestling, presentation is everything — it’s the difference between being hailed as the “next big thing” and being booed out of the building. While this includes entrance music and cool wrestling moves, maybe most important of all is ring gear. Like any piece of fashion, it needs to look cool, but it should also tell us what we need to know about the wrestler.

All Elite Wrestling boasts a diverse roster of women, who all have distinct — and very impressive — attire, so let’s take a look at AEW women’s division’s ten best, and see all the different styles and looks on display in the company.

10 Awesome Kong

Awesome Kong is a nearly 20-year veteran, so she’s got a pretty well established aesthetic, namely that of a warrior that evokes characters like Xena: Warrior Princess and Wonder Woman. Those kinds of approaches can run the risk of seeming too costume-y (WWE often has this problem), but Kong’s stuff is always well designed. Her attire during her AEW run has featured some new takes on her familiar style, including a rare palette swap as well as spots to attach the stolen hair of her victims.

9 Bea Priestley

Bea Priestley’s gimmick is “gothic heel”and her attire reflects this pretty well. Mostly black, the outfit employs metal eyelets and studs to give the gear an industrial vibe. The use of additional color on Priestley’s gear — here it’s a pink leopard print — adds a nice pop, and keeps the outfit from seeming generic. It’s a modern gothic sensibility — goths love back, but in the 21st century they acknowledge other colors exist, too.

8 Big Swole

If you’re talking about cool wrestling gear, you’re always going to come across some cosplay outfits. At least 60% of modern wrestlers grew up being super into nerdy things, and like to reflect that in their ring gear — for example, Johnny Gargano, Tegan Nox, and AEW’s own Shanna, who frequently rocks a Dragon Ball Z inspired outfit.

Here Big Swole went for gear based on Storm from X-Men -- specifically the ‘90s animated series design — which not only tickles the nerd part of a wrestling fan’s brain, but also offers a light grey/yellow combination you don’t see too often.

7 Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D.

The wisest decision in Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D’s ring gear is that she doesn’t go overboard on the dentist gimmick. There’s a fine line between “Did you know she’s a dentist?” and Isaac Yankem, D.D.S., and Baker avoids the obvious WrestleCrap-tier comparison by opting for more standard yet modern women’s ring gear with some nice design flourishes with straps and stuff — plus a dentistry symbol on the chest. Sometimes she wears a white coat, but that’s it.

6 Yuka Sakazaki

As far as gear goes, Yuka Sakazaki is the opposite of Britt Baker. Sakazaki’s gimmick is that of a “magical girl,” and she goes all in with her attire by straight-up dressing like a genie, complete with puffy pants, a vest, and a great big fake hoop earring. While it was just established that the subtlety in Baker’s gear was the correct decision, going all-in on the genie look for Sakazaki’s attire is also the right decision. If you’re a pro wrestling genie, your gear needs to be as whimsical as your gimmick.

5 Sadie Gibbs

As someone equal parts athletic and beefy, Sadie Gibbs gives off some serious “no nonsense” vibes, which is largely reflected in her attire. The colors are simple and mostly solid, but the multiple design-y straps give her outfit a sense of identity without necessarily feeling overdesigned. It feels like the philosophy here is that the cut of the gear should have a distinctiveness and allow for easy palette swaps.

4 Nyla Rose

Nyla Rose is a source of controversy when it comes to more narrow-minded wrestling fans — as well as washed-up veterans — but not enough people talk about how dope her ring gear is. Like Awesome Kong, it also seems warrior inspired, but the aesthetic is different.

Rose also goes for more colors — sometimes to reflect her nerd interests, like when she rocked Deathstroke the Terminator inspired attire — and the bloody handprint on the front part of the loincloth makes for a great image.

3 Hikaru Shida

Joshi outfits tend to go with the design philosophy of “be insanely maximalist,” WWE’s Asuka being the most extreme example. On the AEW side of things, you have Riho, who’s got random lace hanging off of like twelve different spots on her outfit, and Hikaru Shida, whose gear has gaps missing as well as ribbons and fishnet sleeves. Which sounds like a slam, but the outfit is really cool, with the simple red and white color scheme with blue accents holding the whole thing together.

2 Allie aka The Bunny

The Butcher, The Bunny, and The Blade in AEW

On paper, Allie’s gimmick — “sexy leather bunny?” — sounds like maybe something that shouldn’t work in wrestling anymore, but Allie’s particular expression of the idea makes it work because it feels like something she might have chosen rather than something some skeevy dudes chose for her. She’s got a cool jacket with spikes, and the lace mask with short bunny ears make for a striking visual that could have easily been silly or objectifying.

1 Penelope Ford

Nobody in AEW looks as cool as Penelope Ford. Maybe it’s because her ring gear isn’t super intricate — it’s a one piece affair with splashes of green and purple and a small but not exploitative torso window, not to mention plain black boots. Part of the coolness comes from her entrance accoutrements, namely the classic leather jacket and giant Wayfarer style shades that hide half her face. In a promotion with genies, beasts, and people who won’t shut up about being dentists, the coolest looking person ends up being the one who adopted the “less is more” philosophy.
