Randy Orton couldn't do it and Shinsuke Nakamura couldn't do it—but AJ Styles could. Tonight on SmackDown Live from Manchester England, the Phenomenal One put an end to the title reign of Jinder Mahal and became the new WWE Champion of the blue brand!
Last night on Raw the Manchester crowd got to witness a title change when The Bar defeated Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose to regain the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship. And tonight they saw what many in the WWE universe have been hoping for ever since he had won the WWE Championship by beating Orton at Backlash—Jinder Mahal lose his belt.
For a second, it looked like Mahal was going to win again with the help of his two little sidekicks the Sign Brothers. The brothers, per usual, created a distraction and gave Mahal the opportunity to hit The Khallas on Styles. However, Styles was able to save himself from the count out by getting his foot on the ropes.
Styles then came back in the match and got the pinfall win after hitting a very nice Phenomenal Forearm getting the 1,2,3 and sending the crowd into a frenzy of excitement!
So, with AJ Styles as the new WWE Champion on SmackDown Live and Survivor Series just a couple weeks away, there are going to be a lot of questions going forward.
Up until tonight, the WWE had been hyping a champion v champion match at Survivor Series between the Raw Universal Champion and the SmackDown Live WWE Champion, Brock Lesnar vs Jinder Mahal.
There had even been a leaked poster for the pay-per-view that showed John Cena as the guest referee for the match which was to lead to Cena feuding with Mahal which would, in turn, lead to Cena defeating The Modern Day Maharaja and getting his record-setting 17th World Championship.
With this win, the WWE universe is obviously going to start getting very excited with the assumption that they will be getting a champion vs champion match at Survivor Series between Lesnar and Styles. But there are still two weeks left until the show so no one should get too excited just yet.
Will Mahal get a rematch before Survivor Series? And if he does, will Styles still be champion come Nov. 19, 2017? Who will fight Lesnar?
