AJ Styles and Samoa Joe have spent much of their decades-long careers alongside one another. The two stars first met in a four-way #1 Contenders match in Ring of Honor in 2003 and in the nearly two decades since have forged a rivalry that was a highlight of their time in TNA (now known as Impact Wrestling) as well as in countless indie promotions.

Eventually, both found themselves performing under the WWE umbrella, where their rivalry continued. Not counting house shows, Styles and Joe have clashed in nearly 30 singles matches, so let’s take a look at the best of the bunch.

10 WWE Crown Jewel, 11/2/2018

AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe, WWE Crown Jewel, 11/2/2018

The 2018 Saudi Arabia show Crown Jewel was mired in controversy as WWE’s decision to continue working with the Saudi government in the wake of the murder of a Turkish journalist resulted in public outcry, pleas from American politicians to cancel the show, and many of WWE’s own stars refusing to work the event.

One of those was Daniel Bryan, set to challenge AJ Styles for the WWE Championship, but Bryan pulled out of the show, so Samoa Joe was his replacement. The result was a solid match on a reviled show, but maybe not worth it.

9 TNA Sacrifice, 5/13/2007

AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe, TNA Sacrifice, 8/14/2005

Not every Styles/Joe match is an all-time classic or even happens for an important reason, like this random Sacrifice non-title singles bout that happens next-to-last on the card, between two huge title matches.

The match only goes about 13 minutes and isn’t their strongest effort, but has some novelty in that Styles played the heel and Joe was the face -- a rarity in their matchups. Both did a great job with the amount of time they were given, and the match is extra notable for its surprising finish.

8 TNA Against All Odds, 2/14/2010

AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe, TNA Against All Odds, 2/14/2010

The Against All Odds pay-per-view was centered around a tournament to determine a #1 Contender to the World Championship, which culminated in a main event match between Mr. Anderson and D’Angelo Dinero. Hilariously, the AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe World Title Match happened before that on the card.

It’s another great Joe vs. Styles match, albeit onehampered by storyline drama. Eric Bischoff was the guest referee and Ric Flair was at ringside, so the storytelling here threatened to overshadow the match itself.

7 PWG All-Star Weekend - Night 1, 4/1/2005

AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe, PWG All-Star Weekend - Night 1, 4/1/2005

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla is the top indie promotion in Southern California and can be depended on to deliver great matches featuring the best indie talent in front of one of the most rabid, excited wrestling crowds in the world.

Even way back in 2005, at the very first All-Star Weekend, this was the case, as Samoa Joe took on AJ Styles in a #1 Contenders match for the PWG Championship. Here, the two got an ample amount of time to put on a great match in front of a hot crowd.

6 WWE Hell In a Cell, 9/16/2018

AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe, WWE Hell In a Cell, 9/16/2018

In 2018, Samoa Joe and AJ Styles rekindled their rivalry in WWE, the most mainstream wrestling venue possible. The storyline behind the matches was hilarious, as Joe was intent on possibly killing Styles and taking over his patriarchal duties as head of the Styles family, in addition to winning the WWE Championship.

This solid title match at Hell in a Cell isn’t the best match of the feud -- it suffers from a screwy ending that serves to continue the feud -- but it proves that Styles and Joe can still work their magic.

5 WWE SummerSlam, 8/19/2018

AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe, WWE SummerSlam, 8/19/2018

The major first encounter of the 2018 Styles/Joe feud for the fate of the Styles family was at SummerSlam, and the bout ended in a DQ when Joe’s antagonizing of AJ’s wife and child inspired Styles to hit his opponent with a chair.

Even despite a disappointing DQ finish, the 22-minute match was still a highlight of the evening, considered by some fans to be the best match of the night thanks to both men’s performances.

4 WWE Super Show-Down, 10/6/2018

AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe, WWE Super Show-Down, 10/6/2018

If you disregard the last-minute-replacement Crown Jewel match, the official end of the Joe/Styles feud happened at WWE’s Australia event Super Show-Down. Given the controversies that happened in their previous matches, this WWE Title match was contested under No Countout, No Disqualification rules, guaranteeing a winner.

In wrestling their match, the two told a great story based on Joe having a bad knee, all of which thankfully led to a clean finish instead of all the nonsense that concluded all their previous WWE matches.

3 ROH War of the Wire, 11/29/2003

AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe, ROH War of the Wire, 11/29/2003

In 2003, Samoa Joe was the third-ever World Champion in Ring of Honor and defended his title against AJ Styles in their first-ever meeting. Despite being their first match, it’s got more than simple historical value.

In fact, it’s just as worthy and must-watch as the best of them, as the two showed just how well they worked together in the ring even this early in their careers and rivalry.

2 TNA Sacrifice, 8/14/2005

AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe, TNA Sacrifice 2005

Two years after their first match against one another, AJ Styles and Samoa Joe were competing in TNA’s X Division, and their entrance in the 2005 Super X Cup tournament would lead to a final match pitting the two against one another at Sacrifice to win a shot at the X Division Championship.

Joe and Styles put on one of their first capital-G great matches, with interference from Christopher Daniels helping to set up their classic Unbreakable three-way match the following month.

1 TNA Turning Point, 12/11/2005

AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe, TNA Turning Point, 12/11/2005

Four months after their Super X Cup match, AJ Styles defended his newly won X Division Championship against Samoa Joe in the obvious match of the night at Turning Point.

Samoa Joe, playing the heel, was awesomely stiff and Styles did an amazing job holding his own against a force like Joe. This match is pretty much the reason that Styles/Joe is such a beloved pairing, and it’s wild that a Jeff Jarrett/Rhyno contest was forced to follow them on the show.
