It was announced this week that Aleister Black and Adam Cole will do battle at NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia on Jan. 27, 2017.
It is now the norm in WWE for an NXT TakeOver event to take place 24 hours before any of the company's major pay-per-views. Hence the next TakeOver on the calendar will take place in Philadelphia later this month the night before Royal Rumble. The main event of the show will pit Johnny Gargano against Andrade 'Cien' Almas as the former tries to capture the NXT Championship.
The last few weeks of NXT have featured matches where various Superstars were vying for a place in a number one contender's match. That match wound up being made up of Gargano, Aleister Black, Lars Sullivan, and Killian Dain. The hard-hitting affair was pretty unmissable and the true underdog of the bout wound up winning the whole thing.
Gargano's win wasn't the only thing from the match that furthered an angle. Black would have likely won the match had it not been for the interruption of The Undisputed Era. Kyle O' Reily and Bobby Fish blindsided the Dutch Superstar first, then Adam Cole came to finish the job. Off the back of that, it was announced on NXT this past Wednesday that the two of them will go one on one in Philadelphia at NXT TakeOver.
The Takeover match won't be the first time the two have clashed one on one. Black has actually already beaten Cole in the match that earned him a place in the aforementioned fatal 4-Way, hence The Undisputed Era's issue with him. At the time it seemed like an odd match to book considering one man would have to lose, but now it has become clear what was being built to the matchup makes a lot more sense.
Even though this match has happened before there will be very few fans complaining about a rematch on a bigger stage. Plus, don't be surprised if extra stipulations are added. Something will need to be put in place to stop Fish and O' Reily getting involved in the match, or maybe Black's potentially newfound adversary Velveteen Dream will be back from injury in time to be in his corner.
