NXT Women's Champion Asuka has now held her championship for a longer period of time than CM Punk's impressive 434 day WWE Championship reign.

Japanese NXT star Asuka has now held her coveted Women's Championship for more than 434 days, longer than CM Punk held the WWE title which was the longest of the modern era for a major singles championship. The champ defended her belt against Ruby Riot at Download Festival over the weekend in a match that ended in bloodshed - Ruby's, not Asuka's.

While the Empress of Tomorrow is due to defend her championship on this week's edition of NXT, the match has already been taped and it's probably safe to assume that she will emerge from the match still champion. The defense will once again be against Ruby Riot, with the added complication of Nikki Cross to make it a triple threat elimination match.

According to Sportskeeda, now that Asuka has surpassed CM Punk's impressive 434 day run she will now have another record in her cross hairs. In 2016 New Day became the longest reigning Tag Team Champions in WWE history, holding the belts for an incredible 483 consecutive days. That gives Asuka a little less than seven weeks to go to topple yet another wrestling record. Lucky for her, that date will come before NXT Takeover: Brooklyn III.

Asuka won her championship all the way back on April 1st 2016, during WrestleMania 32 weekend. She defeated Bayley for the belt and hasn't looked back since, using her patented Asuka Lock to ensure victory. Bayley is only one in a long list of Superstars to try and beat Asuka, as she is also undefeated in NXT on top of her impressive championship reign. At this point it's really hard to see who it will be that finally pins her shoulders to the mat for a three count.

The Empress is becoming somewhat of a record breaker now in WWE. As mentioned above she is also yet to be defeated since joining NXT and recently overtook the long standing record set by Goldberg and how long he went from his debut to his first defeat. The former Universal Champion even acknowledged Asuka's accomplishment and sent a tweet out to congratulate her on passing his milestone.
