Either things are really that bad for Austin Aries or things are really that good. To answer that likely depends on your perspective of the wrestling industry and what’s important to a specific professional wrestler. To Aries, the freedom to go where he wants and make some decent money while doing so has trumped everything else as he made a surprising return to Impact Wrestling on Wednesday.

Not only did he return, he returned to win the Global Championship.

“Tonight in Orlando, FL the man who invented Option C, the man who always finds himself with options, the man who people have been wondering where he would show up next, former 6x X-Division Champion and former World Champion Austin Aries returned to IMPACT!!!” per Impact Wrestling’s website. “Not only did Aries return, but he did so in a MAJOR WAY! Austin Aries came face to face with Global Champion Eli Drake and has completely flipped IMPACT upside down. Austin Aries was able to defeat Eli Drake and is now Global Champion!”

The reaction from fans has been mixed. From fans who have told Aries that he’s failed at wrestling and is settling for a promotion where he might be a big fish in a very small pond to others who hated the fact that Impact would be so forward to spoiling the surprise, many aren’t pleased. Their argument is that this turn of events says more than the fact that Impact would crown Aries as the new champion, but that Impact felt the need to spoil the results of the biggest match on their flagship show in an attempt to gain viewers.

Not one to hold back his opinions, even Aries weighed in on the reaction from fans after the announcement.

The counter-argument is that this is the kind of news that would have leaked anyway and that a title change of this magnitude might attract eyeballs.

This is one of the first big moves in the Don Callis and Scott D’Amore era of Impact. What did you think?  A four-sided ring and a new champion make for quite the Impact (pun intended). Others like Eric Bischoff have given credit to Impact for making a bold move. Rumors are, this move will be followed by the debut of Rey Mysterio.
